I wrote about my treed cat on 6/6/2007, Mali. Things did not look at all good
for her. She was getting exhausted since there was no easy perch for her. And
she been w/o food and water for about 48 hours. But finally she got desperate
enough and she came down with a bit of fall at the end. But she's fine.
Now I'm trying to solve a problem that I've probably had since I first got her
from the SPCA in mid-April 2007, and noticed shortly after that. It didn't seem
too severe at first and I foolishly thought it would resolve itself (don't know
why I thought that), but became a real problem for a while, and is a bad enough
problem now.
Mali uses the litter boxes. But her problem is that she backs up to the edge and
sometimes pees on the edge or over it and the urine gets on the floor. And she
also sometimes poops completely outside the litter box due to the same misuse of
the litter box. I have another cat, Jaws, who has no problems with using the
boxes. I was using two litter boxes until late last week. I thought I should get
a third litter box and that might solve the problem. A post to this NG from a
long time ago, from someone with a similar problem, said adding another litter
box solved the problem.
I added the third litter box and have dedicated much of my life to keeping all
of them clean enough to eat out of. I scoop out whatever within minutes of
whatever ending up in the box(es). My cats think I'm anal retentive. She _seems_
to have stopped pooped outside the boxes, although there have been close calls.
But the peeing on the edge of the box my Mali, with much of it running out onto
the floor continues. I'm open to ideas as to how to solve this problem.
I really like Mali. And I think Jaws likes having her around as well. I've
looked for litter boxes with higher sides, but can't really find anything. I
think I need at least another 2" of height if this is to have any chance of
working. Again, I just can't find anything. It's occurred to me that I might be
able to use three totes...the sides are certainly high enough. The cats may not
want to use them at all, but it seems to be worth a try. I know they have
enclosed litter boxes but I would need three of them to ensure that Mali had no
choice but to use an enclosed box. Of course I risk the possibility that neither
cat will use any of the three enclosed boxes. I can't continue to
experiment...the damage done so far is probably permanent. And cost has to be
minimal. Jaws is headed to surgery ($) tomorrow to have a benign tumor, which is
likely to be come malignant, removed. If I can't solve the Mali problem, she
will have to go back to to the SPCA ASAP. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
Neither cat seems fussy about the litter I use, since they both get in the
litter box. I use 2+ inches of litter in the boxes. Too much? Less litter would
lower Mali's behind, but...? And Jaws is not a problem. The problem is _how_
Mali uses the litter box, not whther she uses it. My house is quiet and the cats
are generally not interrupted. Both are indoor/outdoor cats.
I'm getting the totes this afternoon. They're cheap and can be used for other
things if they don't work. Mali needs a solution fast or she's headed back to
the SPCA where she previously languished for 2 months before I came to her
rescue.
Any ideas would be a big help. Long term experimentation is not an option.
All the cats I've got on my own have been strays or Mali. We're up to our ears
in strays where I am--we think people just drop them off because they don't want
to bother with them. I've fed or am feeding a total of 4 strays where I have now
lived for about 18 months. One had to be put down and _I_ had to pay for that.
Two others either failed to survive the brutal winter this past year or moved
on. I'm feeding a stray right. Got a collar, but no neighbor claims her. She's
somewhat friendly, seems to get along with Jaws and Mali, and possibly
adoptable. I'll trap her and take her to the SPCA if I can't find someone to
take her. Other people have taken to just shooting strays that hang
around...they are or can be real pests. So it goes...

It is fairly common for cats to back up to the edge an sometimes get urine
over the edge. In fact, Duffy did that on a fairly consistent basis for
awhile after I adopted him. My solution was that I looked for a litter box
with the highest sides possible. I ended up with a *large* size box with
hood, and I discarded the hood (many cats dislike them and will not use
those boxes at all). That may sound like a waste, but the sides and back
were higher. That completely solved the problem. If Duffy does back up the
edge, the urine runs down *inside* the box -- but he seldom even does that
any more. It seems that when he touches the side, he moves forward a bit.
Concerning your second problem: Place one of the boxes in a *completely
separate room,* somewhere that is not in close proximity to the one they use
for urine.

I have a litter box that has a little lid on it. My kitten can get in and
out of the box easily so it should be good for Mali. I completely understand
your problem with strays, that's how I got my kitten (yesterday as a matter
of fact). It's so sad that people would do that, but it happens. Her mom was
a stray as well and has been hanging around my apartment complex for about a
year.

I purchased 3 "totes" today--those plastic storage containers that usually come
with lids. Their length and width are a bit more than my current litter boxes
(good) and they are about 10 inches deep(good, I think). I'm not sure Mali _and_
Jaws will use these, but it's worth a shot.
The problem with the litter box with a lid was that the ones I saw were fairly
expensive...about $34 each as I remember. I needed three since I did not want
Mali to have any option but to use one or more of the new boxes. The totes were
fairly inexpensive, sturdy, and there's a lip on the sides so getting into and
out of the box won't bother their feet. I may need to put something heavy in
thing so they cannot tip over. With Jaws having surgery tomorrow $ is tight.
I'll set them up tomorrow. Hopefully both Mali and Jaws will take to them OK. It
will take some doing for Mali to poop _or_ pee over the 10" tall side. I'll let
you know how things work out.
I'm afraid my neighbor is just shooting the stray cats instead of using the
Havahart trap I loaned them a couple weeks ago..I've been hearing occasional
gun-shots coming from the direction of me neighbors house. They admit shooting
one and they say that the other has disappeared just after I loaned them the
Havahart trap, which they said they haven't used anyway(yeah, right!)...it had
taken up residence under their porch and with just a little food would have hung
around. I told them that if they caught them, I'd take them to the SPCA. These
are to catch one tonight. These are hungry desperate cats and easy to catch. The
other thing that makes no sense is their saying that the cats get into their
garbage and spread it around. Maybe a little. But the raccoons around here will
do far more damage and really tear things up. The raccoons are the real problem.
They can kill _all_ the cats...the raccoons will still really tear things up.
And I have no idea why they don't put their garbage where the animals _can't_
get to it and maybe feed the cats a bit. I can do the rest for them. Something
is not quite right about what they are telling me. Either that or they are
dumber or more cruel than I think.
Of course the current strays will soon be replaced by new ones. I can't save
them all. So it goes...
Now, I want some of the people who drop these cats off. If I spot them, I'm not
quite sure what I'll do, but I'll probably just turn them in.
Cats have consumed my life.

The final word is that I purchased 3 totes, each a little wider and longer than
the litter boxes they were to replace. The sides of the totes are about 10" high
vs. about 5-1/2" for the litter boxes. Mali can no longer pee or poop out onto
the floor. My other cat, Jaws, doesn't mind using these totes as litter boxes
either. The problem seems to be solved--I just replaced the litter boxes with
the totes yesterday afternoon, but they've already got plenty of use and all is
well so far.
I get to keep Mali after all. But I can't help but wonder what she's got up her
sleeve next to cause me misery and grief. Jaws and I are at about the same
stages of our lives and we prefer a slower, more peaceful lifestyle. Mali is
about 1 year old and seems to enjoy making mischief.
As for the other stray cats, I may or may not intervene to try to save them. I
can't be responsible for all the cats around here.
