I need some advice on what might be going on with my house cat... lately she
has been loosing hair all over the house.  I have been going around the
rooms (especially the living room where she usually hangs out) picking up
small fur piles. There have been times when I had to gather enough hair to
make a cat coat (or almost, a pair of kitty mittens), but this afternoon she
was sitting under the table in the living room in a large hand full pile of
fur.  It is getting rather warm these days, and it has been a little warm in
the house when I get home from work, could it be normal for her to be
shedding her hair because of the heat.  Or, prayerfull not, something
medically wrong? :-(

Yes, it's normal for a cat to be shedding (anytime, but in particular when
it gets warm).

Get a brush and start brushing it, that will both cut down on fur around the
house, and cut down on hairballs and associated vomiting of them.

Usually unhealthy hair loss is going to make visible bald spots, or thinning
in areas (an uneven coat in other words).

In the spring, I get a softball size ball of fur (unpacked) off each of mine
every week.  So it's a lot of fur.

Is this cat new to you? If it seems an abnormal amount of hair do as another
poster suggested and check for thining of hair and balled spots. Try
brushing her hair everyday until the shedding slows. If you notice any of
the bad things suggested then off to the vet with you two.
Good luck
