I've been in a diabetic group for years and one of the first things I
learned was YMMV. (Your Mileage May Vary.)  One diabetic can drink
orange juice; I can't.  I'm new to a cat group but
I'm  also finding cats vary a LOT.   Never liked cats much and at 79
I'm amused to find that I'm captivated by 12 pounds of orange striped
fluff - Pumpkin, the dripping water lapper.

I always thought cats didn't cuddle much.  Pumpkin jumps into my lap
and purrs madly.  Stretches his head so I can pet his chin.  Follows
me around the house (when he's in if) and flops down somewhere near
where I'm working.  Jumps on the keyboard, the sink, the counter, the
desk.....
mews at me at night until I go to bed so he can light on the end and
go to sleep with his chin on my leg.

Of course, right now he's outdoors bossing the neighborhood.  Couple
of yapping little dogs across the street have to be intimidated.
Birds around the feeder next door have to be chased.  Black cat down
the road has to be put in his place (which is under the nearest parked
car).  Workers in the yard on the other side have to be investigated
just in case they turn up some mice.....or lizards.
And there's a sunny spot next to the catnip plant that needs to be
napped in.........zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Oops - just heard the dog door flap.  And a "mew, mew".  "Where are
you?"   The boss is back!

Nan.  Whose coach turned into a Pumpkin........

Yes, cats do vary a lot but, no doubt, you've got a cat, this so nice
little pest.

Yep - much like people, animals have their own personalities.

I'm glad I learned earlier in life than you - although I'm no spring
chicken either.

It seems a lot of people are prejudiced when it comes to animals - note
the recent thread here regarding for voting for or against dogs/cats.

Admittedly a few years ago, I would not have hesitated to vote dogs, but
now I have seen the light.  I'm no longer "specist".

There are good dogs, good cats, bad dogs and bad cats - they all have
their own personalities and they all can be very wonderful pets and very
loyal and loving.

There are certainly generalizations that can be made about either
species, but I don't find either species "better" - they are merely
different.  As is always the case, YMMV .

Absolutely! But err... for me, in the city, with no back yard, I'd
rather not have a dog. Walking the dog at 6 am is not my idea of a
nice life :) But I did walk a neighbor's Rottweiler for some time at
three in the aft and it was fun. The most gentle and kind animal you
can imagine...

yeah - dogs require everyday maintenance, but it's mutually beneficial
in the long run.

Rottweilers are sweethearts - I look back fondly on a confrontation
between a Rottweiler and a Chihuahua.  The Chihuahua was fiercely
defending her territory - the Rott was an invited guest (not invited by
the Chihuahuah, however).  Rott's attitude was "let's play".  It never
even crossed his mind that the smaller dogs head could have easily fit
in its mouth - or maybe it did, but the Rott never let on.

The Chihuahua is a sweetheart too, but don't tread on its turf if she
doesn't know you.
