Friends of mine have a 17 year old strictly indoors cat.
Now she's recently started meowing in the night. Wonder why? All doors are
open, food is available.

Maybe a cat toy might help - even though she is 17? My cat likes playing
with a brightly coloured ping pong ball! Or it could be simply that because
her sleep pattern is out of sync with us humans?

I try to keep my kitty occupied during the day, though he's having a catnap
right now! so at night he has used up all his energy & wants to sleep
through.

regarding the sleep patterns...cats are nocturnal (at least most are).  I've
never had a cat who slept through the night on a regular basis...supposedly
they sleep through the day and are up more at night.

she's probably going senile.. Mine forgets where she is in the house from
time to time, so I just call out to her when she cries..

or if she is only crying at night, her eyesight might be going, and she
really is just lost in the house.

I, too, suspect her eyesight is failing a little.  Perhaps a
nightlight where she is might help.  Good luck.

My first guess is hearing is going. Has the cat been tested for deafness?
