Haven't heard anything about dry food, but what I have hear about the canned
food is,
that the one manufacturer is supplying to all of the 80-some companies
listed. Though
sold under different brand names, it all comes from the same place.

Scary thought.

My kitten had eaten half a pouch of one of the listed foods and I was
scared. She seemed pretty lethargic and moody for a couple of days, but now
seems back to what's normal, more or less, for her. How did the company get
away with that? don't they have some testing to determine the proper mixture
before it goes into the can or pouch? I'm going to be reading the labels a
bit better from now on. The kitten likes Purina Pro canned food and UI think
we'll stick with it- it's not on "the list"

A couple of points on this:
1.  Apparently the company knew about the problem back in December
but did nothing.
2.  Reports are coming in of animals with the symptoms from cat food
not on the list.   Details are not being given.    They're considering
legal action at this time.

As far as how the compnay gets away with it?  They have a friend in
the  white house who has given large corporations a blank check.....

I thought you were the biggest defender of Iams on this newsgroup.
Now look what's happened.  Iams maker Proctor and Gamble is a
politically far-right corporation, a good bedfellow for you.

I thought it was more the other way round- the corporations give their buddy
in the White House a blank cheque  and he gives them laws that enable them to
ignore health and safety etc etc in pursuit of the God known as Profit

Especially considering the price differential between all those brands.

Actually, while it is quite common for multiple brands to come from the
same place and just have different labels on them I believe in this
instance, many of these products ARE different, but use some common
ingredients supplied by a single company (Menu Foods).

Specifically, this ingredient is wheat gluten, which is part of what
goes into making "gravy" (or so I have read).

BTW, this relabeling of exactly the same products is used in all types
of industries, be it electronics, clothing, human food or pet food.

So much for pet food companies making safe products. Here is some info:

Wasn't someone here recently making the claim that standards for pet
foods were even MORE highly regulated than food meant for human consumption?

What's somewhat amazing to me is that the media isn't more interested in
this story.

They're STILL talking about Anna Nicole Smith every day on the "news".

I think MORE Americans would be interested in this story since they
actually own pets and care for them very much than they care about Anna
Nicole Smith.

One interesting thing about that list - it's grown since I first checked
it.  A consumer who heard about the recall last week may have checked
that list and been relieved that their pets food was NOT on it and are
STILL feeding it to their pet right now, even though that brand was
later added to the list.

16 deaths have been linked to this problem, but more than 240 pet deaths
have been reported to petconnection.com according to
http://www.kxly.com/news/?sect_rank=2&section_id=560&story_id=9526

How many more deaths have NOT been reported?

Starting February 27th, Menu Foods performed tests on "40 to 50" cats
and dogs.  7 of them died.

While actual numbers of deaths is relatively low at this time, this
could potentially be huge.

What is disturbing to me is this started as a problem involving a half
dozen brands.  Since then it has mushroomed into 90+ brands of cat and
dog food.

By comparison the deaths from Vioxx are 27,000 to 54,000 depending on
whose numbers you want to believe.

Comparing drugs to food isn't right.
