I have three Rag Doll cats along with a dog who died a year ago have resided
with my roommate and I.  We have all been together for six years.  My
roommate now claims he thinks he has a cat allergy because his eyes are
swelling some and bothering him.   Has anybody ever heard of someone getting
an allergy to cats after like five or six years or is it likely something
else.  He could of course go to the doctor and get tested but he sort of
knows it all and has decided it's the cats.   Just in general what I know of
allergies they develop much quicker thansix years but what do I know?

Allergies can develop spontaneously.

Clean up, vacuum thoughly, and see if that helps.

Your first sentence is really hard to parse.
I'm guessing you don't still have the dog.

Yes. Unfortunately, people will usually develop allergies with continuous
exposure over a period of time......Keep the floors and furniture vacuumed,
and hope for the best.....

Thank you for you help, we try to keep things clean and have a good vacuum
and such.   It's just this guy is fifty years old and has been living with
my cats for 6 years. I guess that means it can happen to cat owners all of a
sudden after years of cat lovin.

Yup. They test people who apply for jobs in animal shelters to make sure
they aren't allergic to anything, but they usually have to change jobs in a
few years because they develop allergies....I am allergic (to a slight
degree) to my cats, but I put up with it because I like cats so much.......

I used to be allergic to cats and dogs, but over time I think that I have
actually gotten over my allergies.  I used to get watery itchy eyes, runny
nose, and sneezing when I was around cats or dogs, but being a cat lover I
considered these symptoms well worth it.  However, for whatever reason I
don't have these symptoms anymore.  I never got the shots, but I guess that
the power of love has cured me.

Me, too. IO don't take shots, but do take Zyrtec, which seems to help a
lot. I am always stuffed up, but other than that I have no bad symptoms
that would make me hide from our kitten.

;Yes, allergies can be developed.  The girl who clips my kittys claws has
developed an allergy to cats but she takes benedryl and keeps doing it.  She
loves grooming animals...especially kitties.
