Where can I find cat lovers?

Greetings! I am new to this group, so let me introduce myself: I work
for a major US university, doing writing and consulting work for a
wide range of academic and research departments, one of which is the
university's vet school. The vet school has a special feline health
center, and over the years the center has built up a library of
educational DVDs for cat owners. They want to promote the DVDs, and
have asked me to help them find ways of letting cat owners know about
them.

So let me ask the cat owners themselves: Do many of you read magazines
like Cat Fancy--and would it make sense for us to place an ad in them?
Are there websites where cat owners congregate, where we could buy
ads? How do I find out about cat shows that we could help sponsor or
buy ads in the programs?

Any other suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Equinimity (basically a horse person, but one who enjoys cats as well)

I think it would be worth it to advertise with Cat Fancy.  The following
link is a link to email the Cat Fancy advertising service.

Copy the following link into your email program's To:  line
msylvestro@bowtieinc.com

(Please include your full name, company name, and city.)

Put this on the CC:  line as well mwilliams@bowtieinc.com

Put this into the Subject: line: Advertise with Us

I am a cat owner and I have 3 cats. You can see them at the top of my
website:  http://fmamradios.com/Johnny.htm

I do not think that the ads in Cat Fancy would cost you anything, although I
have never tried.

I will post another message with the information about cat shows.

Have a good day,

Johnny Byrns

I don't read any cat magazines.  I'll pick one up and flip through it if
there's a line at PetSmart, but such advertising wouldn't work for me.
It would probably work for other people, but I'm not sure how much of
the market you would reach.

OTOH, I suspect that those people who do read cat magazines would be
more likely to buy your product anyway, so perhaps it would be worthwhile.

Whatever you do, please do not resort to marketing campaigns via message
boards or unsolicited e-mail.  That will only piss people off and many
people will refuse to even visit your website as a result.

To reach a consumer like me, your best bet is to get PetSmart to agree
to carry your product and place it near the register. Price it
reasonably as it would be an impulse buy(I don't go looking for pet
DVDs) so price it fairly.

If it were under $10 and purported to educate me about best practices
for feline health care and cat behavior, I would probably snap it up.

If it were over $15 and seemed like a collection of "cute cat videos"
that I'm likely to see on a lame cable TV show with utterly inane
commentary, I wouldn't even consider it.

I'm only speaking for myself, of course, and I'm probably not
representative of the market in general.
