I rescued a week old kitten, got her all litter trained and on food by 6
weeks.  A real treat for me.  I felt like SuperMom.  At 8 weeks I gave her to
friends since I was moving to another state and staying with my son for a bit
and he and his daughter are allergic.  I had visiting rights til I left and
used them, but felt like something wasn't right with her, she wasn't the
sweet little kitty I gave them.  Most of her toys were in a basket in a
corner, her scratching post was in the basement...  Their answer was..she
didn't use them.  Ultimately I didn't move and the friday before Christmas
they gave her back to me telling me she was a beast...bitting and scratching
all the time.  After 1 day she seemed like she remembered me, loves to be
held and cuddled (on her terms of course) and is very well adjusted. In
conversation with them I discovered they were trying to train her like a
puppy...and were a bit cruel to her.  All I can say is I'm so glad I've got
my furball back.  She plays hard and rough, so I've got toys that I use with
her to get this out of her system...and she loves to lay on me at night and
even crawls under the covers and sleeps "on my lap" when I'm in the fetal
position.  It's useless to keep her off anything, because when I'm working
she does as she wants anyway.  The best way to get her to cuddle is get on
the phone or computer...then she wants ALL my attention.

I'm so sorry I gave her to them because she has developed a "tough" side to
protect herself.  Imagine, trying to train a kitty like a puppy.....
trying to train a cat like a dog.

its amazing how many people out there think that way.  Sadly too many in the
medical profession as well.

Im glad she's back to you, and Im sure with the proper care, she'll turn
back into the sweet kitten she was meant to be.

(she is neutered, right?)

Actually...she's being done today.  As far as I can figure she's just 6
months, the age my vet likes to Spay and neuter.

Yeah.  Meaning, the humans didn't want them lying about and didn't
encourage the kitty to use them.  Luckily that's a very easy thing for
you to correct!

Ultimately I didn't move and the friday before Christmas

She wanted her Mama.  and you are her Mama, as you got her so young,
and saved her life; you must know she would have died without you to
care for her.  How wonderful you got her back, and how wonderful for
her, that she got you back!

You're saying two different things.  I wasn't aware that dog training
was intended to be cruel.  Cats love to be trained; actually they
think of the interaction with you, as having fun.

It's useless to keep her off anything, because when I'm working

Of course when you are away and can't supervise your kitten's
activities, you care enough for her welfare to put her in her own room
with the door shut, along with a gazillion toys, potty, food, water,
(an answering machine for you to use, to talk to her while you're at
work, is very very nice for her) and a way up to the window?  I'm sure
you wouldn't think of letting her wander the house on her own -- you
must know that's very dangerous for her.
