If possible, I'd like to hear some personal stories of people who own or
have owned Siberian cats. Supposedly, alot of who are allergic to other
cats are not allergic to Siberian ones.
I have pretty bad allergies... involving itchy eyes , headaches , difficulty
breathing and such. But if getting a Siberian wont affect me, I may get
one.
thanks

You allergic to dogs too? Because dogs are way better than cats. ;)

I think there's a non-allergenic dog too.
Spanish Water Dog or something like that.
IIRC it's something about hair vs fur.

I wish there was a way to get skin tested for allergies to Siberian Cats
only.

You might have effectively the same thing if the fur/hair distinction holds up.
Maybe you could get tested for fur/hair allergies, then determine whether the
Siberian has fur, hair or something else.

Get a hair from one & tape it to your arm for a few days.....If you are
allergic, you should be able to tell.

Hypoallergenic dogs and cats....What a concept!

It's not the fur, it's the dander. And some people *are* allergic to
Siberians.
Only way to tell is to spend some time with one.

John -
Our 11 year-old boy is very allergic to dogs and cats. My wife was
researching cat allergies and we learned about Siberians. We went to a
nearby Siberian owner (who doesn't own any other types of animals) and spent
some time there, with our son sticking his face in the cat's fur, etc.,
trying to cause a reaction - zippo!
So we were adopted by a pair of kittens and our son hasn't had any trouble!
But - and this is very important - Siberian cats are not clinically
hypoallergenic, they just produce a lot less of the protein in their saliva
that is the cause of the allergy. Most folks have no or very minimal
reactions to them, but others react more severely. You'll need to find an
owner or breeder nearby who's willing to let you do a little field test.
I'd also like to point out that these are awesome cats, especially if you
like dogs. They're not little foo-foos, and are a lot of fun to be with.
Anyway, I put a web site together to help share our experiences with others
at www.WeLoveSiberians.com - come on over and check out the information and
ask any questions you might have. :-)
Cheers,
Mike
