Our kitten seems to like to gnaw on a cardboard box - one in particular.
Anybody know why a kitten (age 6 ± months) would want to chew the edge
of a cardboard box to shreds?

Mine does  some cats like the noise or the feeling on their teeth.  It is a
normal thing they do

Both of my cats LOVE cardboard boxes.  I keep one in each room and within a
couple of months they are all torn to shreds and I have to replace them.
They even choose the cardboard boxes over the furniture which is wonderful  :)

Ketzl loves cardboard boxes -- to chew on as well as to lounge in. I
think it's a normal thing for some cats; as Matthew pointed out, it's
probably due to the feel, the texture and the sound and exercise it
provides.

One of my friend's cats likes to tear apart plastic bags, in much the same way.

My cat Sunny (who lived to a healthy 19 years of age) was a fanatical
cardboard box chewer all his life.  It was amazing to see him sit in a
cardboard box, methodically chewing bits off the edge and spitting them out.
He would keep this up until he was sitting on nothing but the box's base,
having chewed the flaps and sides away completely in a matter of days!

He did have a good set of teeth though, right until the end.  It never
seemed to do him any harm, and it was the only kind of "destructive" thing
he seemed to do.

Yes it's definately normal behaivour... Went to put the xmas tree back in
the box last week and found the box at half the size and a heck of a lot of
shredded box left behind... I have to ensure my cats only kill the box
they're given as all cardboard is at their mercy in this house.
I'd agree that it's because they enjoy the feeling on the teeth and lets
them unleash a bit of destruction...now if only i could get them to clean up
after they've made the mess...

Just so you know, kittens do have baby teeth and adult teeth, and at that
age, the kitten is probably teething.

Yep, I totally agree:  As to why the one box, I have a theory:  it was
convenient, and tasted/felt good, as someone above said.  and, cats
like certain of the glues used  in the corrugated process.  I'll give
you one guess as to why that is [think about it].  Cats will also chew
on books near the binding, for the same reason.  -- summerrose
