We recently bought a beautiful female ragdoll kitten. She's very playful and
at the breeder's house there was a large dog which she seemed to get along
with.
We have a lonely jack russell terrier female, 7 years old. At the moment we
have the dog living downstairs and the kitten upstairs. I have researched
quite a few guides on how to introduce them. Our first "meeting" wasn't too
good. We held both animals away from each other (the dog also on a lead),
the kitten was frightened of the dog as soon as it moved in our grip and ran
away to hide.
The good thing is the dog is not at all agressive, however her excitement is
what I think is scaring the kitten. The kitten is quite curious and has had
a couple attempts at trying to look down nervously and see the dog. However
the levels are fenced off and neither of them can get to each other at the
moment.
Can anyone recommend a good approach to take form here on? We have shared
some towels with the dog's/cat's smells and they both happily smell them. We
have tried to let them make eye contact by holding them both from a long
distance - but the kitten is definitely too scared. The kitten is very happy
so far living up stairs, but we would like them to start to tolerate each
other sometime.
Thanks alot!

This is exactly the same situation like we had it half a year ago. If the
dog doesn't bite then let it roam as freely as possible. My dog reacts
aggressively towards other dogs when being held, but not when let free. This
would be the same situation with any other animal (cat, rabbit). The cat has
to have opportunity to withdraw though, like a shelf to jump on or the like.
I often give them treats when they are together and tell the two of them how
special they are. Now they get on really well. They even played with each
other in the garden this week.
Good luck!
