Hi all. Does any one know if my cat has upper respretrey syndrome.
He has mainley one dark brown gooey eye that all ways weeps and the same side he seems to get dark brown
gunk in his ear. The last 4 months he hes started to sneez a lot. Seems like the sneezing is fluid that he is trying to clear out of his nose.
I have taken him to the vet and thay tryed 2 corses of a antibiotic and 1 corse of a diferant one that was a ointment to put in his eye and ear. I think it might haved helped
a bit but i thorugt to much antibiotics could be harmfull and stoped .Look like i am up for another visit to the vet again this will be the forth time and the vet gives me no word on whats wrong with him. Other than that he his a happey 7 year old cat.

Gena,

If it is an upper respiratory virus, antibiotics won't help. There are
other infections that can happen from a virus, like eye infections, that
need antibiotics.

Sometimes a problem in the mouth -- like a broken or infected tooth, can
give the same symptoms. One of our cats had a stopped up nose and runny
eye mainly on one side of his face, and it turned out to be bad teeth on
that side. After the teeth were removed, he started getting better
immediately.

If you aren't happy with what the vet is doing, it doesn't hurt to take
your cat to a different vet for another opinion.

Good luck,

Rhonda

Although antibiotics do not cure the virus they do help prevent other
complications from forming.L-lysine can also help with the eye problem.

First of all it sounds like he ha an upper respiratory infection and should
be on antibiotics. Has he been vaccinated. Rhino virus is highly contagious
to cats and going around right now. Also it sounds as if he may have ear
mites. Is he scratching at his ears at all. Or he could have an ear infection
for lettingthe other go on so long contacted through his lymph knods. The
weepy eyes sneezing and coughing can all be related to rhino virus but there
can be other things going on and he needs to see a vet. Antibiotics are not
that expensive.
