tick infestation

Hiya,

One of my 6 cats seems to have an infestation of ticks. Just this
morning I found another patch of them, just behind his front
leg/shoulder (on the edge of his 'underarm') There were like 10 of
these little suckers all attacking this one spot, which would have been
about 10mm in diameter. The funny thing is, all the ones I am finding
on his front end, chest/front legs, seem to have 'scabbed over'  -
which is why I though he had been fighting, until I took a scab off and
found a 2mm tick buried in his skin. All the ticks seem to create a
little crater that they settle into. Much to his disgust I have cut
most of the fur off the main areas, mainly so the sores don't get fur
stuck in them.

Anyway, is there any particular product that will get rid of these once
and for all? Regular flea and tick powder doesn't seem to be doing it.
Also, what should I do with the holes left by the ticks after removal?
I have put Betadine on them today.

Just in case it is relevant, I live in Tasmania, Australia.

TIA,
Monique

Frontline Plus is probably the answer.  It's a lot cheaper in
Australia than elsewhere (I buy from an Au. vendor).  Many people
control the cost my buying the largest dog size package and metering
the dosage (0.5 ml) for the cats with a syringe or calibrated dropper
(the rest of the dispenser contents can be stored in a small bottle).

Normally, the treatments are once a month, but one Au. type tick
(paralysis ticks) requires twice monthly dosage plus daily inspection
and removal.

Check with your vet for advice on handling the wounds - is possible,
take a dead but intact sample of the tick with you (or take the
infested cat).
