Swollen lymph nodes - Lymphoma?

Hello all -

I have a Persian cat who is now nine years old.  He has always been in
great health - no problems, rarely sick, etc.  Recently I noticed a lump
behind his jaw, and after a precursory search found other lumps which
are symmetrical (both sides of his neck/jaw, his armpits, hind legs,
etc. - swollen lymph nodes)  We took him to see the vet that we have
been using for a couple years now, and this guy didn't seem to concerned
about them and told us to "just wait". We waited a few days and there
was no change so we went to schedule an appointment to bring him back,
only to find that the guy retired. So, we decided to get a second
opinion and took him to see another vet.  We were worried about this all
week and when the new vet checked him out (just by feeling the areas we
mentioned), she informed us that she was fairly sure it was lymphoma. As
you can imagine we are devastated by this news - he is no ordinary cat
and we love him very dearly.  We are scheduled to have a biopsy done in
a few days and fear the worst.

My questions are these -

Is it possible for him to have had lymphoma for all this time with no
symptoms other than the swollen glands we found?  He seems healthier
than he has ever been - his weight is good ( even better than before)
his appetite is normal, etc. - everything seems fine.

Is there a possibility that it is NOT Lymphoma and what are the odds on
his symptoms being related to another problem entirely (preferably
something that is not life threatening).

If it IS lymphoma - what are the odds of him surviving this and what can
we expect?

Any info or opinions on this will be welcome as we are really desperate
at this point and will do anything to get this taken care of.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

It can be cancer, but can also be an infection. I can't believe the vet
said to wait.

Our cat had surgery this year, then got swollen glands in her neck and
back legs as she was recovering. It was a scare because we thought an
internal infection was reoccurring -- but it turned out to be a broken
tooth that was infected. Her jaw lymph nodes were huge and the leg ones
were smaller.

After removing the tooth and being on antibiotics for a few weeks,
everything went back to normal.

I hope things turn out well for your kitty.

Good luck,

Rhonda

The lymph glands swell with any infection - it's what they do?

Thanks for the info.  I am not 100% sold on the lymphoma idea.  I would
think (though I could be wrong) that he would have had some other symptoms.

Simon,

I would think there would be more symptoms too. We lost a cat to cancer
and his symptoms were puzzling and dramatic, and had those symptoms
before we found any lumps. His lost a lot of weight, would not eat much,
and was generally lethargic. I do no know his type of cancer, we did not
find out he had cancer until shortly before he died and we chose not to
have a necropsy. This all happened in about 2-3 weeks. His tumor turned
out to be in the kidney area.

Anyway, here's some info from a website about lymphoma symptoms:

----------------------------------------
What are the symptoms of lymphoma in cats?

Cats that develop lymphoma are much more likely to develop more severe
symptoms than dogs. Whereas dogs often appear healthy except for swollen
lymph nodes, cats will often be physically ill. The symptoms correspond
closely to the location of the lymphoma. Cats with the alimentary form
of lymphoma often present with weight loss, rough hair coat, loss of
appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Cats with the mediastinal form often
have respiratory distress and fluid in the lung cavity. If lymphoma
develops in the kidney, the cat may have increased water consumption and
increased urination. If the lymphoma is located in the nose, the cat may
have discharge from the nose and facial swelling. Cats who are also
infected with FeLV often present with pale mucous membranes due to anemia.

The rest of the article is interesting, if you want to read more about
it and the different forms.

I have my fingers crossed for your kitty,

Rhonda
