Ok, so my little guy, Trouble, is just starting to sleep at night instead of
running around the apartment like a maniac and I have encountered something
that I have never seen before with a cat sleeping.  I sleep on my side and he
sleeps with his back to my back and completely stretched out from head to
foot.  His paws are stretched out over his head and his feet are down down
past my butt.  My other cat, as other cats that I have had and seen, sleeps
in a ball (granted, a ball that is wrapped around my head at night.....).
Also, he has begun snoring and moaning throughout the night.  Not a painful
moan, but a playful one as I can tell he is dreaming because I can feel his
whole body moving throughout the night, lol.  Now, God forbid I try to move,
which is not easy with one cat wrapped around your head and the other up
against your back, he stands up, while moaning and gives me the bloody look
of death before collapsing into another position uncomfortable position (for
me that is).  Does anyone else have these sleepness nights all for the sake
of your cat's comfort or is just me?

I had a male black short-hair who used to do the
same thing at night.  He would also insist on crowding us
out when we would sit in an easy chair.  Had him for
13 years, before he passed on due to failed kidneys.
He had been adopted as a kitten by another military
family, even though they knew they were transferring
in a couple of months.  They abandon him, when they
moved.  It was great timing, since our cat had just passed
on a few weeks earlier.  We adopted him and took him
with us when we transfered.  Not surprising his first family
dumped him.  Both parents were alcoholic, and their kids
were always in trouble.

It's nice to take care of an abandoned cat.....I have one I picked up in a
Burger King parking lot.....He really appreciates us, and is very loving. He
wakes me up every morning by coming up on my chest to make sure I am still
alive......We call him, "B-K".

my 7 month old cat likes to sleep on my head.  she also kneads my hair!! it
is really hard to describe.

I have long hair and she likes to play with it.  she bites and pulls at my
hair with her claws.  all the while she is purring away.  I don't think she
does it to be a minx.  she seems to do it as a cat would knead on a woolly
jumper (or bare skin at times!!)

when she is not on my pillow the eldest cat sleeps there.  she is about 11
years old and a bit of a grumpy old lady.   if I move my head in the night
she does that buck rabbit thing with her back legs and meows in a whiney
tone.  charming - it's my bed after all!!! I end up moving my head to
accommodate her  it's a quieter life that way.  .

That's exactly it!  Accomodating them first does seem to make my life easier,
lol.  Who needs sleep anyway!

Yeah....We have four cats, and two of them like to sleep on our bed. but we
move around so much that they usually end up down by our feet....they get
discouraged by our rolling over when they are up by our chest or
heads......The other two cats won't sleep on the bed....One was trained not
to by her former owners, and the other, a feral cat, worries too much.....He
sleeps near the cat door, so he can split should some stranger come in the
house....A "watch cat" he's not!

That is so funny to imagine... My kitten sleeps somewhere around my
knees and chews on my hand when I reach down to see where she is....

Mine sometimes sleeps stretched out, but usually balls up.  She doesn't
want anything to do with me when I go to sleep (probably because I toss
and turn too much before falling asleep, but will usually end up
sleeping next to my legs once I'm dead to the world.

Your post reminded me of a veterinarian/author I saw on TV (PBS, IIRC) a
while back.  He talked about behavior like yours.  I don't remember the
exact statistic, but most people do let their pets sleep with them
(excluding fish, I presume) and many are afraid of disturbing their cats
or dogs who sleep 16 hours a day and thus end up depriving themselves of
sleep.

The way I see it, as long as I'm the one bringing home the bacon, my
sleep is more important than my cat's, especially when I find it much
harder to fall asleep than she does.  All she has to do is close her
eyes and she's in dreamland.  If only I could do that...

When she starts feeding me (and I mean steak, not some songbird she
killed in the backyard), I'll let myself be deprived of sleep so she
won't be disturbed.
Calico - 10 Jan 2007 01:57 GMT
Most mornings I awake to find my little calico 'balled' at the end of
the bed. She absolutely, positively HATES movement of any kind (so she
cannot bear being on your lap for more than say, 2 minutes, although
she does try now and again, bless her) so she waits till she thinks I'm
asleep before making her move. Sometimes if she's tired she'll just put
up with my tossing and turning but I don't half feel guilty disturbing
her!

Well, that's understandable....To a cat, we must be kind of like an
elephant...Would you want to cuddle up to an elephant overnight? - If it
decides to roll over, you might wake up dead.....

I've only got one cat, a four-year-old male tabby I adopted from a
shelter three years ago, but at night he seems like two (or more) cats
in the amount of space he consumes. He also does that "long cat"
sleeping thing from time to time up against my back (as well as the
ball; in fact, various forms of the ball, usually down around my
ankles) but what really convinced me we were made for each other was
the first time I saw him curled up with his "arm" over his eyes, as if
to block out daylight. I'm troubled by light too and need a dark room
to sleep; I usually awaken with the light regardless of the hour, and I
have awakened on many occasion with my paw -- I mean arm -- over my
face to block out the light.

Oh heck, did I say "I adopted [him] from a shelter"? I meant to say,
with apologies to him, "He adopted me."
