Petco Prices Higher Than Petsmart?

A new Petco just opened across the street from the
Petsmart where I shop.  How does Petco expect to win
new customers when Royal Canin dry cat food is two
dollars higher a bag, and they don't carry Spa Select
canned cat food?   You would think Petco management
would have taken the time to study their competition?
Is Petco this stupid throughout the U.S.?

I refuse to shop at Petco.  It is more expensive there than any other store
around.  I just buy all of my pet products at the supermarket where it is
MUCH cheaper for the same exact items.

I would buy my cat's stuff at the grocery store if they carried the
brands I buy.

Science Diet for food and Tidy Cats Crystals for litter.  I'd be willing
to listen to anyone who thinks there are better brands, but that's what
I get for her, because she's a sweetheart and deserves the best, IMO.

I submit that you need neither store in order to give your pet cats all they
need. I feed mine roasted chicken, which is about the finest food they can
get, and it costs considerably less than the 55 cents a 6 oz can that
Safeway charges me for canned cat food. Even WINCO's 28 cents a can price
can be surpassed if one takes care to buy ones raw chickens on sale, and
then roasts them in ones own oven. There is also another advantage in doing
this....You can eat the chickens yourself! My cats enjoy the fact that they
are eating the same food that I eat. (at least from time to time)

Yes....In general, Petco's prices are way too high. Apparently, people think
they are giving their pets more because they pay more for it. Actually, the
pets could care less. I have found that the best prices around here are at
WINCO, but they don't have them everywhere....It stands for Washington,
Idaho, Nevada, California, & Oregon.......Wall-Mart is pretty good,
too......

Walmart does not carry any quality cat foods, at least that is true in
my area.   They have Iams & other assorted junk foods.  However,
WM litter prices are the best.

The Wal-Marts in my area (minneapolis) don't carry any of the
flusheable litters (sWheat and others) only clay based stuff.

Since my cats are indoor/outdoor cats, I just keep a litter box for when it
is too cold for them to want to go out. - I think most people just buy
whatever cat food their cats seem to like, but this might not be what's best
for the cat. And, there's nothing to prevent a cat food manufacturer from
spiking the cat food with some foreign substance that attracts the cats, but
doesn't really provide good nutritional content for them.....We really need
a, "consumers union" type of evaluation for cat food........

I would like to know just what cat foods are the best, or carry the best
quality to price ratio....Do you know of any independent testing laboratory
that provides these figures?

Not exactly a "lab,"  but I did find extensive detailed info on the web,
when I was trying to figure out what food to switch my fur balls to.
Thanks to people in this group I was alerted to the fact that Iams and
Science Diet are not the wonder products they would have you
believe they are.   Moreover, I was not aware of the cozy relationship
between vets and Hills (Science Diet).  Again, I was made aware of
this cozy relationship by people in this group.  I questioned my vet
about it, and she was rather evasive.  Not that I would dump her
over that, she is a wonder woman, when it comes to cats, and she
does carry a variety of name brands in her office.  Unfortunately,
her prices on Royal Canin, the food I use, are a bit more than what
Petsmart sells it for......bz

Well, I have four cats, from four different origins, and they all like
different food. Only the feral cat will eat human food, probably because he
spent his formative years raiding garbage cans in order to stay alive. The
one I picked up in a Burger King parking lot was living on French fries and
onion rings and anything people threw at him for the first year of his life,
and today he won't touch human food. He lives strictly on
kibbles.....Lapping up sugared milk from my wife's cereal bowl is the only
exception. The two females eat wet canned cat food as well as kibbles. We
have no way to restrict what any of them eat, so they all enjoy an infinite
bowl of kibbles at the very least, and we try to mix the flavors up so they
will stay interested......

You've pointed out the obvious.

I've had a cat for about 2 1/2 years.  About 2 years ago, I exchanged
e-mails with someone at PetCo.

After pointing out that the exact same food and litter were twice as
much at PetCo than Petsmart and a comparable toy was 3 1/2 times as much
(since PetCo carried an inferior version of the toy my cat loves), their
response was that PetCo was "not a discount store".

Is anyone under the impression that PetSmart IS a discount store?  (I
mean, besides comparing them to PetCo.)

I wrote back and told them that I didn't think PetSmart was a "discount
store" either.  They didn't reply.

My only conclusion is that PetCo is NOT a discount store - they are a
RIPOFF store.
