Couch Question Cat Incontinence

I have finally accepted that my 16 year old cat is just going to pee where
she wants.  What kind of couch would be better -- leather or fabric?  I am
starting to loathe the smell of Febreze.

Why?

Cats pee inappropriately for a reason. Have you taken any time to discover
why she is doing this?

No, none, you stupid bitch.  No, I haven't brought her to the vet or gotten
new litter boxes or extra litter boxes or tried new food or litter or
anything like that.  Oh, no.   Thanks for your "help."  I live in a small
NYC apartment with two cats and am trying to make it work.  I could give her
away or put her down, but instead I am just trying to live with a problem I
seem unable to solve, even after trying many different solutions.  I am
re-arranging my life around my cat, hence the question of what kind of couch
would be best.  And all I get is snotty, know-it-all comments from a little
bitch like you. Thanks. You are almost as much help as the vet -- at least
you didn't charge me tons of money.

With an attitude like yours at least you won't have to worry about receiving
any more suggestions.

You didn't give any details of your situation -- like the big detail
that you've seen a vet already. I don't think Judy's response was
snotty, maybe blunt, but it sounds like you are extremely touchy about
the situation.

I think you should try another vet. If this is fairly new behavior and
the cat is that old, don't give up. There is something going on and it
may take another vet brain to find it. What all have they checked? Have
them take an x-ray to look for bladder stones (they don't show in normal
urine tests.) My vet's tech had a cat with a huge bladder stone but the
cat had no crystals in the urine and the Ph check came out normal. They
can also see on the x-ray if she has arthritis in her spine, which can
make them uncomfortable when they pee and cause behavior problems.

There is also a condition called interstitial cystitis. You can read
Megan's post about it here:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.pets.cats.health+behav/msg/070f48d478088997

Good luck.

Really?  She does have arthritis in her hips, but the vet never mentioned
that that could be causing the peeing-on-the-couch-and-other-places problem.
Could it be, if it's in her hips?  Allow me to say that your post is an
example of the kind of manners I truly admire and try to emulate (although I
clearly don't always).

We had a cat with arthritis in her lower spine, and we didn't know it.
She started peeing standing up and it took us a long time to find out it
was a back problem. We thought she was doing territorial spraying. She
not only peed standing up in the litter box, she did it on whatever wall
was closest.

If your cat is having trouble squatting because of pain in her hips, she
may either be more comfortable peeing on something cushiony, or may
associate her pain with the litter box and develop an aversion to it.
That arthritis could very well be a problem for her.

It wouldn't hurt to talk this all over with a vet and try to help her
with her hip pain to see if it will help her habits. Some swear by
acupuncture for their arthritic cats, we haven't tried that yet.

Thanks!

By the way, last time Abernathy had a bladder infection I covered the
couch with cheap plastic (used a shower curtain liner.) I put a blanket
on top of that so we weren't sitting on plastic. That may be a
short-term solution for you.

Good luck,

Rhonda

She does like to pee on soft things -- the couch, my favorite shirt, stuff
like that.

I will bring all this up with the vet.

Oh, boy.  I think she would HATE that.  However, this is NYC, so I am sure I
could find someone who could do cat acupuncture well.

It definitely sounds to me as though the OP is extremely touchy. So touchy
that the fact that I asked to questions were perceived as "snotty comments."
As you said, the OP didn't provide any details. As a result I asked two
questions in hope of getting more information so that advice would be
offered. But oh no, all I got back was something from a very agitated
person. Either that or he/she is a troll.

I will look at the accusation that I am touchy if you look at the accusation
that what you wrote sounded bitchy.  Can you see how <<Have you taken any
time to discover why she is doing this?>> might sound like an accusation?

Neither leather nor fabric is going to result in livable conditions for you
or the cat.

I know this is hard, but if you can't solve this issue
you need to get rid of the cat.

Sorry, just my opinion.

Your uninformed opinion sucks and I hope she yells at you.  I suspect her
cat's peeing is caused either by the onset of diabetes or from early renal
failure, both of which can be treated but it takes some work.  It is her
crappy attitude that keeps me from wanting to help.  Living in NYC doesn't
grant her license to be rude.

Ah, but you HAVE helped me, against your desire but not your better
judgment.  Look, Judy gave a snotty, obnoxious, completely unhelpful answer
to my completely innocuous post.  That doesn't excuse my rudeness -- and I
was rude -- but it explains it.  I will bring her back to the vet and ask
him to look specifically for those things.  She was just there, but maybe he
missed them some how.

Oups, answered the wrong post, sorry :-(

You are the cat lover, it was the other guy, the one who "sucks" I thought I
was posting to, again very sorry about that !

I was under the impression that this cat had already been to the vet.
If the problem isn't curable by this owner, I don't know.

What would you recommend, leather or fabric?

Yes, but all she wanted to know was what kind of couch to buy. - I am from
New York too. Buy a naugahide (plastic) covered couch.

That's true -- that IS all I wanted to know.  I was happy to get the other
information, though, as long as it was given in a helpful, nice way.

I can't.  I just...can't.

I won't.  I made a commitment to take care of this cat when I first got her
from the shelter almost nine years ago.  I won't back out now that she is 16
years old and incontinent.  I guess I'll just have to live with it and buy
another couch when she goes to cat heaven.  Since the vet said her health is
good, god only knows when that will be.

I'm not clear on whether you've tried the vet route yet.
I was under the impression you had already.

If you haven't you should.

Yes. And I wouldn't abandon any of my cats because they have become
difficult in their old age.....I am getting old myself..........They are my
friends, and they are a lot more trustworthy than most of the people I have
known......

I like cats a lot.
I've had one since the 50s.
I think there need to be limits.
Letting the cat pee where I sit is one of my limits.

while I applaud your decision to keep your cat, I have to say your comments
to Judy were a little out of line.  I check this BB every couple of days,
and I have not heard of you having this issue before.  A cat who urinates
indiscriminately absolutely needs to be seen by a vet, as it goes against
the cat's very nature to do so.  You made no mention of vet visits or any
previous attempts to appease the cat's need to use something other than the
litterbox.

Your previous posts mention that the cat did go to the vet.. What was
checked for? was your sweet kitty checked for a UTI?  Was urine collected
and tested for infection?  Was blood work run?  Diabetes, kidney failure and
a whole host of other reasons could be causing this.   How about x-rays to
check for growths, stones, and arthritis, which might make standing in a
litterbox painful?

Other causes might be a disruption in the house.  Did anything change that
caused the urination?  A new cat, a new roommate, a new chair, a new set of
curtains that don't smell quite right to the kitty?  Is the box covered.
Some cats will develop a fear / dislike of covered boxes.  You mentioned
trying several different things on this front to appease your kitty, but did
you try cat attract litter.  A lot of owners have had great success with
it.. It is designed for kitties who have stopped using the box for what ever
reason, and just continue to do so after the reason is resolved.

my 15 yr old kitty stopped standing IN the litterbox to go pee many years
ago.  I tried everything, tested her for everything, treated her for
diabetes (onset was after the peeing started) so I simply adjusted my life
to fit her needs, by buying puppy pads or absorbent underpads (for
incontinent humans in bed) and put those down where she chooses to pee.  Its
expensive, but nothing else worked for me.. and Id rather pay a few extra
dollars for our peace of mind.
