I have 7 indoor cats and a dog. One outside cat who never wants inside till
it's THIS cold.. He cannot mix wiht my 7 indoor cats. I know "Killer" (the
outside one) has been spayed, some rabies shots, but nothing else about her
except that she is very affectioate,.I know I can' t let her in our house or
it will be "the animals or me"

Now I am worried about killer, but she has had a recycle bin (decent size)
turned on its side with deep blankets wrapped aroung a heating pad which we
plug in to the outlet on our deck, We put the pad between two heavy, soft
towels and set it on HIGH. Show her were it is & when she lays down we just
pull the towell we had on top, over the entrace way so the wind won't blow
in as hard adn freezing!

This has worked with Killer for 5 years, but toniht I heard a wild cat fight
outside my door & when I got out there,
a cat I had never see before (light creamcolored wiht orange ears and couple
of orange spots on her face. She/he really loooked a lot like a kitten, an
older kitten, but not adult. Anyway it was in Killer's heating blanket bed
&*they were facing off screaming and spittin and by time I got outside, the
new cat was all the way laying down in Killer's warn place we made for her.
When he saw me, he bolted! I

I now want to help both, but my hubby cant know. But I can't sleep or think
of anythng else but that poor cali kitten that found warmth inthis horible
cold snap & ran away.

I got a good sized cardboard box and put in the FRONT yard, behind our
shurbbery (for shelter) and put a thick plush bath towel in with it, tipped
up on the sides to make a bed. I hope she finds it & it keeps her warm .
Killer dont seem to want to use his heating paid apartment after this
tonight. He can get in my car, but it's as cold as everything else.

Any ideas on how to help this new littel kitten get throght the winter
without getting too attached to ihim and with hin not gettting too attacched
to me? I just want to get him throuht his harsh winter alive. then he could
leave

Try running an electric heating pad within a semi-covered cat bed at the end
of a long extension cord.
That should work unless it precipitates.

Well, I don't know the layout of your house, but if you have a place like
ours, you might try keeping a warm place in your garage for it. I bought my
place from some people who had small dogs, and they already had a small dog
door cut into the side garage door. I put a cardboard box on a shelf in the
garage, and put a waterproof-type heating pad in it and kept it on low.
(Heating pads can easily get too warm, so keep it on low. the feral cat
spent a winter sleeping there. (eventually he became domesticated, and now
he shares our house with the other three cats) Keep him in fresh water and
kibbles with a heating pad in a box, and he will survive just fine. Feral
cats have a natural instinct for finding places to sleep that are out of the
wind and cold, and they have a thick coat that you wouldn't believe. If you
don't have a useable garage, cut a hole under the porch or anywhere close in
to your house where he will be out of the cold wind. A cardboard box with a
hole in it and a heating pad is more than good enough for all the cats I
have ever known.....

Everyone in my area, Western New York, has told me that if you keep a cat out of
the wind and provide it with food and water, the cat will do just fine. And it
does get very cold in my area. My brother kept a bobtail cat for years and all
it had was a plastic barrel (waterproof) with a rug, and food and water was put
out for it every day. It was not neutered, which was a major problem. But that
cat lasted many years before age and illness did it in. The winter it died, I
was feeding it and during a very cold period noticed that there were no paw
prints around. I had previously seen that it was very sick and told my brother
that I would take her to the Vet and have her put down AND that I would pay the
fees. He wouldn't let me do it, so it died an unpleasant and all too prolonged
death. The cat was found in the spring under the porch where it had apparently
either tried to find more warmth or to die.

But until old and infirm, the cat did well with a shelter, pad inside, wind
blocked, and food/water every day.

Currently, I have two indoor cats and one or two outdoor cats. One came for food
just about every night last winter and found shelter elsehwere. This year, I've
built a shelter for him, but he won't use it ( so far)...he still comes for
food. He's beginning to trust me and I think he'll come inside someday, but that
will be a major problem in itself.  The other outdoor cat is a newcomer and I
rarely see it. But it comes for food from time to time.

They just keep coming and coming.
