One of my cats started acting very strange earlier, she started zipping
around the place and hiding under a large cushion and peeping over the back
of the sofa.  She just looked different it is hard for me to describe but I
think you will understand if one of your cats acted different to normal.
She would not let me smooth her and bit me a couple of times.

Then she was OK and then she started biting again and did not want to be
picked up, this is strange for her as she is very placid.  Earlier I was
outside and picked some parsley and some rosemary for something I am
cooking.  Do you think it may have been the rosemary that caused her to act
in this way as I have not brought it inside before.

How old is she? My kitten does the same thing every once in a while. My
daughter is real perturbed about it as she's the one who gets bit more
often than not...Sometimes she rolls her eyes around and gives this
horrid look with eyes half shut. But she's ok - usually. LMK...

She is just over four and a half years old, it only lasted for a short time.

My 19 month old Deetoo runs around like a banshee almost once everyday, just
like described. If I can catch her, it's a wrestling match with teeth and
claws everywhere. All the time while she's trying to rip my hand to shreds,
I'm laughing hysterically. I keep her claws trimmed so all I really have to
watch out for is not letting any of my fingers get crunched in her back
teeth.

Hi MD

She is just playing exuberantly!..... I know exactly what you mean when you
say that she looks "different"...... mine gets a real "in-your-face"
wild-eyed look, with her ears flattened down, and she herself is usually
flattened down as well. This usually starts with her zipping around the sofa
and then she kind of hunches down behind the cushions as if to hide from me.
I play the game with her and I bob down behind the sofa so she can't see
me....... I try and wait until she comes to see where I have disappeared to
(or until my legs cramp.... whichever comes first......lol) and then I jump
up when she spies me, and it must give her a real thrill to be "ambushed"
like that.  She usually races straight over to her scratching post and has a
good scratch, just from sheet excitement!!.  She absolutely LOVES this game!

Sometimes if I have a thick sweater on when we are playing like this, I pull
the sleeve down over my hand and let her "attack" me and give my arm a good
"kicking"...... she loves it!

It is just playing behaviour, and I guess it represents what she would be
doing if she encountered an "enemy" out in the outdoors.

Cats seem to react strongly to certain scents.  Mine are not at all turned
on by catnip, but they go nuts for Cat Thyme  (Teucrium maru).  This has a
very pungent aroma and they roll on the plant if they have a chance, and
sometimes I dry some and put a little of the dried leaf in little cloth bags
with some uncooked rice (for weight) and then sew up the little bags.  The
cats carry these around the house, and roll on them from time to time.....
it is so funny! (like addicts carrying around their fix!)

So.... I guess it could have been the Rosemary that set your cat off into
"wild" behaviour for a little while.  The essential oils in Rosemary are
VERY strong, so I guess it could have been that scent that triggered her
off!  I haven't heard of this effect from Rosemary before........ mmmmm.....
must try it!  However, it may just have been that your cat was feeling
pretty good, and very happy, and just wanted a good rough play!  (I presume
she has been de-sexed?)

Enjoy your "wild cat" games!

Thanks very much for the reply Roberta and I think the answer has been
found, it is probably Thyme that I brought into the house as it is next to
the Rosemary and I got it muddled as I was rushing about.  I often get the
herbs mixed up, I always have and its not my strong point.  I will follow
your tip and put some in some bags tomorrow.

Many thanks to all who replied.
