Cat keeps tearing up carpet under doors

Hi, I live in an apartment complex and everytime a door is shut my cat
rips up the carpet underneath. Last night my door accidently closed
while I was asleep and I wake up him tearing up more of the carpet, it's
driving me nuts. I'm not going to get my deposit back because of this...
worst thing is he doesn't even come in afterwards he just walks away.

How can I stop this destructive behavior short of declawing him?

I solved this by cutting a strip of plastic 4" wide x width of the
doorway and anchoring it with carpet tacks.  I used strips cut from
a scrap of plastic siding - about 1/16" thick.  Suitable material
findable at any DIY store, etc.  The stuff I used was white, but
if I had to shop for it, I would have chosen clear or carpet color.
Put in enough tacks to keep the edges secured to avoid a tripping
hazard.  Works perfectly, but only if the floor beneath the carpet
is tackable (not cement).

Cats are always on the wrong side of the door. It's their job.  If there's
carpet they'll tear it up, if it's a hard surface, they usually just wail
pitifully. If it's got weather stripping around it, they'll tear that up.

I'm really beginning to think a lot of it is simply that they don't like
doors, because, as you said, they don't seem to always feel the need to go
through the door once it's opened.

Roby's idea is great..may try it to protect what little we have left in a
couple of our doorways....

Now that I have solved your door problem, here's mine:

Clawde (aka, Wide Load) absolutely loves to shred a roll
of toilet paper - bites and chews it to total destruction.
So I keep the door closed.  Um, except when I am using
facilities and the herd feels the need to observe.

Once in a while, Clawde manages to get left inside and
does his thing.  I suppose I could hide the roll in a
drawer ... and post a sign informing panic-stricken
guests of the secret location.

Is there a better way.  Several man-to-cat talks have
not solved this long-standing problem.

There is no solving it some cats do this.  It is a problem that need to be
solved when the furball was a kitten.  Too late now

Alternatives  put more items that the cats can use to stretch their claws
example  scratch board use cat nip on them to get interested in them.

Mine will shred them if they are left off the roller.  Try one of those
hidden rollers  that you have to lift the cover to get to it.  Or keep the
door close not much you can do

Dunz goes through cycles with toilet paper- she'll ignore it for weeks
and then I'll get up and find the bathroom festooned with the stuff.

When she starts doing that I have to put it on the drawers in the
bedroom and hand it to guests when they want to use the toilet!

Thankfully as she's got older she's stopped doing it so much and most
of our friends are saavy enough to ask if the toilet paper is in the
loo or in the bedroom? And get it

It's mad through when we have officials or people who don't know the
set up round and they ask if they can use the toilet,,,

It has got to the point that I have to keep my TP in a drawer now.

We have found, as our feline residents grew from 2 to 5, that it was simply
much easier to "cat proof" the house (much as one would "child proof" it),
than to ever expect them to know what *we* thought they were doing wrong.

do what I do and leave doors open

seriously.

they know what doors should stay closed so they leave them alone. but the
others doors have to be left open.  we even have a wedge for one door so it
is not closed accidentally.

maybe you could lay down something like tin foil for a while.  I believe
they don't like the sound (?)

www.softpaws.com (not that I don't love everyone else's suggestions)

I also install cat doors for doors that might close.  So you have to replace
a door, no big deal.

It is if you live in an apartment complex. I might try SoftClaws
though... I hear they are difficult to put on though.

I have the exact same problem. my deposit is down the drain now too.
i got the double sided tape and it has worked! even if it isnt the
stickyness that they hate. they cant get to the carpet through the tape.
Just be careful because it sucks when you step in the tape!
You can find some "sticky paws" at the pet store or just buy a role of
double sided tape. it is the exact same thing and its cheaper!
