My cat is the textbook example of the "I'm queen of this house" mindset.
She only likes to be petted when she asks to be by plopping down in front of
me with her belly and paws up in the air or when she cozies up to me to
sleep. She only meows at me when she wants food or spots an intruder
(namely, any sort of bug) or when I'm asleep and she feels it's time for me
to get up. She purrs a lot when she's getting her needed attention, but
she's not really much of a meowing cat. On average, I'd say she only meows
early in the morning when it's time for me to get up and feed her, and
that's only if I don't hear her knocking her food bowl around. So, can
someone please tell me why she might be feeling the need to meow 24/7 now?
It's been going on for a couple weeks now and I just don't understand it!
She meows at me, so I go to pet her and she's one of those cats who really
doesn't like to be bothered unless she has given the "all clear" sign. So,
when I get there, assuming she wants some attention, she goes into "attack"
mode and freaks out and runs away. She stands on the table (which I gave up
breaking her of long ago) and meows at the wall like she does when she sees
a bug, but there's no bug there when I go look. She sits on the bed and
just meows at me. Could it be a sign that something is wrong? I noticed on
Friday evening when I was petting her that there was some sort of bump on
her neck. It felt small, like a mole, but she got up and left when I tried
to examine it further. So, for the rest of the weekend I tried to see it.
I eventually got her to lay still for me and discovered three or four little
spots on her skin on her neck that look either to be scabs or moles of some
kind. I didn't mess with them much because I couldn't tell what they were,
but if they are moles they seem to be more of the "skin tag" variety that
sort of hang off a little bit. She doesn't seem to have any idea that
they're there. I've never seen her scratch at them or do anything with
them. None the less, I'm calling the vet when the office opens this morning
and hopefully I can take her in today since I have the day off work. But,
could something like that cause the change in behavior? Any thoughts on
what those things on her neck might be? If it helps any, she's a short hair
domestic tortoise shell and she's about 3 years old and she is spayed.
Sorry for the long post, but I don't understand all the meowing! As I type
this, she's sitting in the window sill looking at me and meowing non-stop.
Other than the constant meowing, which is completely new, she seems to be
her normal self.

Hi Beth:
Thanks for all the info....since she is spayed, she is not in heat.
My second guess would be pain, or nausea of some sort.
Assuming there have been no big changes in your home or
household or lifestyle that might have upset her. Vet visit
for sure. The "moles" or "lumps" might be nothing more than
benign tumours, but might be something else....only experienced
hands and/or a biopsy can tell you for sure.
Other illnesses can present with altered behaviour. Many other
illnesses, including diabetes, hyperthyroidism, urinary tract
problems renal disease. Or it could just be a strange new
development in her personality. But you have to rule out
the treatable stuff before you can assume that.
Also, have a look around your house grounds to make sure
there isn't a stray cat out there who is driving her nuts
through the window!!

I took her to the vet yesterday afternoon, and after an hour waiting for my
4:15 appointment, I finally got in at 5:15 :) The vet said the little spots
were probably a mild allergic reaction to something and he checked for fleas
as they are a common cause of such things. But, she has no fleas. The
little spots were small scabby areas and he said that they appeared to
actually be healing up so that whatever the reaction was to was probably not
major enough for regular treatment, especially since she hadn't been trying
to do anything to the area herself, such as scratching or extra grooming.
In fact, until I found the area, she didn't seem to notice anything at all.
So, at least I know that those scabby things aren't the cause of the
meowing. The doctor also ran some tests and I'll get the results today, but
he said she shows no signs of other problems, so I think she'll be fine.
Perhaps the meowing is just a new stage in the personality of my kitty :) I
will say though that she didn't meow as much when I got her home last night.
Who knows, maybe she did notice something on her neck and wanted me to take
her to the vet :) Thanks for the reply! I'm glad I don't have to freak out
any more! I was concerned that they were growths of some sort, but I'm glad
they weren't! Also, I just have to say how much I love my vet! He didn't
even charge me for the office visit!

Hi, Beth, is she an indoor cat - does she need more stimulation? Has anything
in the house or environment changed, has anything in the family dynamics
changed, have you introduced another pet, who interacts with her the most?
She does sound a pretty typical naughtie tortie!

I have a 2 year old Tortie "CiCi" she meows all the time especially if there
is a bug. She talks to me all the time. Someone told me that cats think that
we are cats and they only talk to us and not other cats. I just always make
sure she has food and water and love on her when she will let me. She likes
me to talk to her. I bought her a mouse you could put cat nip in the belly of
it and she throws it around and likes me to throw it so she can fetch and
bring it back to me to do it again. She also loves my pony tail holders. I
flip them across the room and she gets and brings them back to me. I have
heard all tortie's have attitudes. CiCi likes to be petted but when she is
done or just doesn't want to be touched, she bites me. It doesn't hurt she is
just spoiled and is "the queen of the house" . She does head butt her water
bowl til all of the water is out I do not know what is up with that. I give
up trying to figure her out. She plays constantly especially with my feet and
likes chasing me through the house. She was trying to nurse my ponytail but I
broke her of that. She is odd. My grandmother had one too and she was like
that. Your cat sounds so much like mine so I had to reply. CiCi knocked my
Christmas tree over twice because her food bowl was empty I guess Tortie's
are in control because I sure cater to her every need. and do whatever to
keep her from acting up as much as possible. As for the bumps that worries me
I guess I need to have CiCi checked. My grandmother's cat always had knots of
hair matted up I know that.
