We recently rescued a 10 week kitten from an overburdened family (5
cats and a dog) and he ("Roo") is really affectionate however our older
cat ("Bear" is 4 years old) wont tolerate him and being very shy she
doesnt get to sitting on the sofa anymore.
Also Roo eats like a combine-harvester so we are trying to separate
them at feeding times but Bear like a nibble at night (well dont we
all?) but that's impossible because Roo polishes off anything edible
(bread ,vegetable leftovers) that's left out.
Is there a solution, will we ever get an undisturbed nights sleep, will
they get used to one an other, will Bear come for a cuddle?

Give them time to work out their pecking order. Eventually things
will settle down.
As for food, coming from a family like that he may not have gotten too
much. Hopefully once he finds out that he will always be fed and will
not have to fight for it he will change.
Reminds me of when I got my Margie from the local Humane Society where
they were not caged but all ran lose and were fed that way. When I
got her home every couple minutes she was going to the food area to
get a bite, After 3 or 4 days she did it less and less. Give Bear a
"bite" at night and hold the other one while he eats.
JUST DON"T PUSH / RUSH THINGS BETWEEN THEM!!!

Hello CM,
Kittens eat a LOT, and need to eat a lot. They are still developing and
need many more calories than adult cats. Can you leave out food
full-time for now? Is he getting enough kitten food?
Don't let that little one get into the people food, sounds like he's a
stinker. Also, did the family get him wormed yet? All kittens need to be
wormed.
I think the two cats will work it out, it's probably just a big shock to
Bear. Make sure to give Bear more attention than normal so that he's not
as threatened by the kitten. Things will get to be more normal and they
will work out a routine.
Good luck,
Rhonda

Thanks for the reassurance.
Last night Bear had a late night meal while Roo was in the bathroom as
we got ready for bed, and she slept thru till 6am! We were well
pleased.
Roo doesnt seem hungry ie he never begs but he is always the first to
arrive in the kitchen.
Yes we had him wormed and vaccinated, and the next appoinment at the
vet is planned for around the year end!

Time is usually good medicine for such ills...
