Anyone have an idea as to how much initial vaccinations for a 3 month old kitten run? We have the initial checkup for ours on Friday and I'd like to be somewhat prepared....We live in N. NJ, BTW... Thanks. Kathy Oh, I'm sorry, there are really too many variables! Some clinics do offer a "kitten pack" which is a flat rate to include the boosters that you'll need. But to give you a hint about some of the things that MIGHT be on the list for you: Office call: anywhere from $30 to $50 usually, but some clinics offer big discounts for "wellness exams" and/or first baby visits. FVRCP vaccine (must have) FeLV (leukemia vacc, not always given to indoor only cats) FIV (some vets will not use it, but if they do, depends on your situation and regional incidence) FIP (ditto, just like the fiv) Chlamydia (some vets use, some don't) Rabies (you will need, but not until 16+ weeks) A vet can charge anywhere from $12 to $25 per vaccine. You won't need all of these, though. You see, it is impossible to guess what your clinics general vaccine protocol and price structure might be. But just in case it helps, here is my clinics price for the normal protocol that they have found suitable for my region: Wellness exam $19, but if they are NOT well and need evaluation $37.50 FVRCP $16 FeLV $16 Rabies $9.90 (but you can't do this, yet, your kitten is too young) Fecal exam $12 FeLV/FIV snap test $35 Wormer, meds for coccidia, and earmite medicine are commonly needed for kittens but not always. A lot of vets will automatically give meds at least for roundworms. Meds that treat roundworm and nothing else are cheap. I think the kitten has ear mites and probably worms. She's going to be an indoor cat, with an occasional outside visit, monitored closely. I'm hoping not really bad, but one lady told me her two cats - adults - cost $600 for their checkup, but one of them needed x-rays... Sigh. The kitten is such a sweetie though.... Thanks. Kathy My only advice to you is go in for your physical, you really need to have that done, but ask them to quote you for everything else before doing it. A busy clinic doesn't always remember to talk money unless you ask, and by asking you get to avoid being stunned at the front counter when you check out. By all means it is important to allow the doctor to provide quality care, and it won't be free, but they are used to and don't mind people considering finances when authorizing services. If it makes you feel any better, x-rays can easily add up to a couple of bills. They can if there is something seriously wrong, but if the kitten is healthy other than some mites and worms, and maybe some fleas, it won't be too crazy I'm sure! My undrestanding is the New York City/Newark NJ area is the most expensive in the nation. Probaby because it is NEW YORK. How old do they have to be to get that one..you know the one for diptheria, feline lukemia and such? I've had friends give that shot when I lived in a community without bus transportation and couldn't afford to pay for it a nd rabies ofcourse that was yearsago...vets have to give the rabies shot though...and don't they have to be 6 months before they get it..or is it 4 now?
