You can try to entice them  but  a cat will do what they want to do

MOST cats do not do anything that they do not want to do.

Ignore it, always works on my cats, sooner or later they want some
attention.

The one thing that few cats can resist is string.  Unless they are very
jaded by life, they will generally stroll over and at least take a few
swipes.  If you drag one across your lap slowly, flicking it here and
there every once in a while until you have his attention, and don't
eyeball the cat...you look at the string as if it is the most
groundbreaking scientific experiment since Rutherford's identification
of the atom.  Just don't let him smell Schroedinger's Cat Trick (keep
your hands low and don't let him think you might grab him to keep him
there, or he won't be there)

If you have a favourite treat in your hand waiting, when the cat gets
there, after fooling with the string for a bit, let him notice the
smell, and make him crawl over your lap to get it.  He might run away
again as soon as he gets it in his mouth, but it's a start.  Do it once
every evening, and you might notice, within a couple of weeks even,
that he starts coming over anyway, just to check, especially when you
are not looking, or you are reading, watching TV, working on computer.
Have treats nearby and he will learn very quickly how to mooch from
you.  The trick is, that if you really want him to get used to coming
to your lap, you must allow him to train *you* what is necessary to get
him to do it.  Never stop him from leaving.  Ever.  Then he will feel
safe in the knowledge that he can come and go as he pleases without
worrying about not being able to get away without a struggle.

Lately, I have noticed that *the* ultimate attractor is when my lap is
full of something else, namely laptop.  My little one keeps coming over
and pouncing on the keys, or just plain sitting on the keyboard, or
even leaping for the cursor if it is floating around the screen.  He's
only two months old though, and still naive.  He still thinks that is
another cat there in the mirror.  With another hyooomaaaan holding it
looks just like his.

My cat hasn't sat on my lap for exactly 13.5 years!  I know this
because he was 6 months old when he went to the vet and came back minus
a couple of items :)  I kid you not, from that day to this he has never
sat on my lap again, how weird is that?  He does sit next to me, belly
up with his head in my lap though.

I have fifteen cats - some are lap cats, some are not.  The curious
thing is that of the ones that are, several are very paticular about
which chair/room we are in.  In general, if the cat uses the chair
when I'm not in it, he/she will use my lap when I am.

How can I get my cat Xedo to get off my lap? He has a tendency to
settle in, fall asleep, and then I'm stuck because I don't want to
disturb him.

Aw......you're a softie aren't you?  Did you know that there is a
Muslim legend that says the Prophet Muhammed had a cat that he loved a
great deal which fell asleep on the sleeve of his robe one day, and
when he needed to get up, rather than disturb the cat, he cut the
sleeve off.

P.S. I'm not suggesting that you cut your lap off.

Yes, I guess I'm a softie. Once Xedo gets established, I really can't
run him off. I will wait. He'll get up eventually. <hmmm>
