My cat is about 7 months old & spayed.
Yesterday about 12 pm i cleaned her litter box.
Went out for the day & came home about 7pm
Her litter box was empty, which surprised me.
When i got home i brought her a new treat which she smelled & walked
away,not even tasting it.
I also brought her a new toy which she loved & played with for a long time.
While watching tv i saw her smelling the rug in the corner of the living
room.
Next she squated & started to pee.
I grabbed her my the scruff of the neck ( like a mother cat would do ) &
carried her down to the litter box & she peed there.
Why did she do this & how can i correct the problem ?

Accidents will happen, put several litter box's around house one in said
corner.  Show her the litter box and move her front paw in scraping motion
in litter.  When she gets used to using litter box's gradually reduce them.

cats PREFER to bury their waste, so cats that are in single cat house holds
(so there is no issue with dominance) who aren't using the litterbox, are
trying to tell you something.  Either A) the litterbox is in a place they do
not like, they don't feel safe, or B) they aren't feeling well.  Since she
is off her food as well, I would highly recommend you take the kitty to the
vet!!

In addition to the other suggestions which are all good, you need to
take your nose into every corner of the house and find out where-all
she has been peeing, it might be more than one spot.  Vigorous
shampooing of the carpet in those areas in necessary because even if
you re-train her to her litter boxes, she will be sorely tempted to pee
in those corners where she can smell her mark.

What is her kitty history?  Is she new to your house?  When and where
was she house-trained?

Connie, your post is right on.  Not necessarily behavioral!

As for finding the urine spots, if your nose isn't so great, wait until dark
and shine a black light around to see if you can find it.  It will
flouresce.  Then squirt some nature's miracle on it.

If it does turn out to be behavioral, desgnr, then you did the proper thing
to correct it.  Catching her in the act, picking her up by the scruff and
putting her in the box is a firm and clear message that will be understood.
Beating cats, scaring them with flailing arms to stop, squirt bottles, or
rubbing their noses in it is pointless and cruel... you did the right thing
pending a vet report!

But please please please...  go to the vet.  She may be afraid to use the
litter box because if she has crystals or any type of cystitis and urinating
is uncomfortable, she may just be hoping it is the litter box itself that
was hurting her.  It is not very expensive to rule out bladder issues.

While you are in process of figuring this out, please consider adding a
litter box to every room.  Temporarily, until you know for sure what you are
dealing with.

Good luck!

I have found that a black light will not show a urine stain of fabric/carpet.
Works great on hard surfaces though.

It does if it is relatively fresh.
