My beautiful sweet kitty has FiL. She suddenly stopped eating a few weeks
ago and only ate a few pcs of dry food per day. She is extremely thin. I
brought her to the vet again 2 days ago and they gave her an injection of
Valium which immediately caused her to eat, but when it wore off she is back
to only sipping water. I believe I will have to put her down soon. I can t
bear to do it but I must. I have tried every trick and every food to try to
entice her.
Now my question: I want the easiest and most pain free way for her to be put
to sleep, by the vet. Please tell me in detail. I have had it done in the
past and it was horrific...I didn't like the method the vet had used.

Please help, I believe I will need to do this in the next 2 days.

Thank you
Kitty

Get on the phone and find a vet clinic open during the weekend.  They'll
give her one shot to put her to sleep and anothe to stop her heart.  It is a
painful ordeal ahead of her but you owe it to her to stop her suffering.  My
condolences at your loss.

Thank you....it seems that this was done last time when I lost a cat to FIP,
and the vet was very brutal in administering these shots, it was not the
last scene I wanted to see with my kitty. I have a new vet .I was hoping
there was a more "pleasant" way if there is such a thing. I am very upset &
frustrated, as I have spent tons of money taking care of my kitties and
making sure they get their vaccinations. In this case, the vet thinks she
was born from a mom who already had leukemia....so giving her a vaccination
didn't help.  I am beside my self, as I know how emotional this is going to
be with me and my kitty. But I cannot let her suffer.

Hi, Kitty, if funds allow, please do consider asking your vet to come to your
home. The attached link relates to CFP, but has an excellent section on
euthanasia considerations.

It's probably difficult to even countenance now, but bodycare can be an
important part of the bereavement process. Again, if funds allow, try and
take care of this yourself and take a swatch of fur to keep. If you have
children over nine years old, involve them in the process as well. When the
UK charity Childline analysed its calls, 15% were from children who had lost
their pets.

Hi Kitty,

I am so sorry your kitty and you are going through this.  I have to tell you,
as having been a vet tech in the past, that knowing your vet is a part of
being comfortable with trusting they will do the best they can to make your
cat's passing as painless as possible.  In abscence of having time to form a
working relationship with the vet, please understand that cats in distress
are particularly difficult to aid as they most want to be left alone and not
handled at all.  I can tell you from experience that cat veins are very, very
tiny and a cat that is dehydrated and debilitated sometimes has no vein to
access in their front limbs.  So an alternate method is to use the hind leg
inside vein, but the cat must be lying on its side.  They alternatively
sometimes have to access a jugular vein in the neck.  There is no perfectly
comfortable way to euthanize a pet, (and it is not a happy day for the techs
and vets either as what they would want most in the world is to be able to
send you home with a perfectly well, happy pet) but most vets I have worked
with do their best in a sad, painful situation to make it easy as possible
for the pet and the grieving owner.

I know you are having difficulties with the idea of letting your cat go, but
comfort yourself with the knowledge that it is our duty and our priviledge to
be able to spare our pets' suffering.  They give us such comfort and love
that it is the least we can do in return, especially in the case of a long-
tem illness.

My good thoughts and wishes are with you and your cat.

I had to put my sweet 6 month old Kodi to sleep due to FIP.

I brought him in, they took him out back and put a catheter in his leg.
They brought him back out to me so I could hold him and be with him, and
when I was ready they came in, injected the solution into the catheter.  He
put his head down, he breathed out his last breath.  There was a very faint
shudder through his body afterwards and he was gone.

I would very much like to find a vet who can do this at home for me, and I
think I have found one, I just have yet to ask him, as I am hopefully years
away from needing it.  It would take out the trauma of having to bring the
kitty to the vet, which most cats hate.  But being able to be there with the
pet gives them comfort and they leave the world knowing they are loved.

If you can't stand to be there, then (at least at the vet I worked at) they
bring the pet out back, put the catheter in, they coo over the pet for a
bit, then inject the solution.  The techs there all cared about animals and
wanted their last moments to be peaceful.

I know not all vets have this kind of concern.. so it is important that you
have a good relationship with yours.

My deepest condolences for what you are facing.  Im crying here remembering
Kodi and thinking about this.  I can only imagine the fragility of your
emotions at having to face it.

Once, I used to get prescriptions of chlorpromazine from my vet to give
my cats to sedate them for air travel.  They were oral pills.  They
worked within twenty minutes.  I still have the leftover pills, just in
case,  though I don't make the cats fly with me anymore, I get a
catsitter.  Does anyone know why they could not be given to a cat
facing the end to eliminate his fear of the trip to the vet?  Much less
traumatic to pill him at home than to have him awake on the way to the
vet, I would think.  Perhaps you could ask your vet on the phone, if
you have time.  My apologies if I am asking an obviously stupid
question here.  And my deepest condolences on what you are going
through right now.

Yes, that's a great idea. I will check with my vet. I am looking for all
ideas. Again, she is very weak and I must do "something" by Monday
afternoon............I will miss her terribly as I do now, she is not her
old self. She is only 3 years old and deserved a longer life.......

Thank you for the suggestion

Thanks to all who have helped. My beautiful brown tabby furkid went over the
rainbow bridge tonight. She was only 3 1/2 years old but left me with tons
of beautiful happy joyful moments. A unique kitty that should have lived
longer........... She was afflicted with leukemia AND lymphoma, her
suffering is done.

Kitty,

My deepest condolences.  I have lost one my beloved late cats to leukemia and
FIP, and have an understanding of the pain you must feel.  I hope you will
find some solace knowing that she is at the Rainbow Bridge where she is free
of illness and debilitation.

Love and kindess,
Jan, Snowy, Petey, and Toonie

You know she is chasing butterflies somewhere tonight because she had a
happy life down here.

Although I didn't see your original post, I am so very sorry for your loss.
Memories are wonderful things, and they sustain us as time goes on.  It
seems that some of our most wonderful furbabies are those that are with us
the shortest time.  Cherish those memories!
