I have a strange question about my cat.

Christina Szeman - 05 Sep 2006 06:15 GMT BlankHello Everyone,
When I first got my cat, she was 7 weeks old. The original owner said that the three white kittens were female and one black kitten was male. We got one of the female ones.
Now my kitten is 5 months old. I just saw something strange last week when she was cleaning. Something popped out of, I think it was her vagina or belly that was the color of her skin: Pink. That was the first time that I have seen it. My parents thought that she was a boy. I didn't think so, because so far, She hasn't sprayed anything and I did see that she was sitting down when she was peeing.
I did have male cat years ago that showed his penis everytime that he washed.
Now, I will confirm this with the vet when I see her next (And if I get a job soon too). All I am asking, is this normal for a female kitten? My mother said that it could be her bellybutton.
I just want to make sure that I haven't been seeing things.

The Polish-Kraut - 05 Sep 2006 14:01 GMT >Something popped out of, I think it was her vagina or >belly that was the color of her skin: Pink. Vagina or belly ?? Vagina is under it tail and belly is under it so which is it??
From http://www.pets-opedia.com/cats/ctanro01.html
Reproductive Organs:
A male cat has two testicles close to it's anus and tightly wrapped in it's scrotum. It's penis is behind the scrotum and points backwards and it is normally tucked inside the cat's body.

Vagina is under it tail and belly is under it so > which is it?? Great, next this genius of anatomy will tell us they tried tasting the area to figure out its function.
Christina Szeman - 06 Sep 2006 02:34 GMT I don't know if it is a vagina or belly. I was looking at it from above when she was lying right next to me.

If you are not one hundred percent sure, take your cat to the vet to find out the gender. Not all males spray at the same age or same provocation. Female spraying is just urine, I think, but male spraying is very very unmistakable as a smell. Regardless, check, because if it is a male, it is normal for the penis to show when self-grooming, sometimes, but if it is a female it could be a problem. I don't know if cats can get it, but I know humans and other animals can have things like prolapsed uterus, and it can be risky for infection and worse so do check.

Christina Szeman - 08 Sep 2006 01:48 GMT tension,
Thank you for you input. I will go to the vet next month when my cat will be spayed, just to find out.
Sincerely, Christina Szeman

If your vet has scheduled a spaying then your kitten is female. The uterus and ovaries will be removed.

My 18 year old female calico is spraying, and she was fixed alot of years ago.

I don't know enough about cats to say that spayed female cats don't spray, but I can say with absolute certainty that mine does not.

> What do you think ?!!?!? How many cats have you seen with square > heads and beards lately ?!?!?!? [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > >> The cat is male. Does he have a large square head that seems to have a > >> beard? Toadvine - 18 Sep 2006 23:53 GMT Not in the case of all four of my male cats, who were all neutered before reaching the age of 6 months. All have square heads, apparent beards and a generally masculine appearance. By contrast female cats will have more triangular heads and will lack the puffed-out hair around the jawline and above the neck.
> only happens if a male cat isnt netered until its a few yrs old > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] >>>>The cat is male. Does he have a large square head that seems to have a >>>>beard? ~*Connie*~ - 09 Sep 2006 00:00 GMT to distinguish between boy and girl kitties, look at the anus. You'll see the other opening for either the penis or the vulva. If there is fur between the two openings, then you have a boy. No fur? Girl. As they get older, the testicles will descend, and you will have more fur and bumps.
If you saw something pop out, I would assume that its a boy. Not all males will clean their actual penis every time. I have five male cats, and none of them do it in front of me. I had a previous male that would do it in front of me all the time.
> BlankHello Everyone, > [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > I just want to make sure that I haven't been seeing things. Andrea - 16 Sep 2006 19:06 GMT Hello Christina,
I am sorry that some people have been rude to you! Others, however, have been kind and helpful... I prefer to be part of THAT club.
You've already gotten some answers so I won't repeat everything, but I do want to say something about spraying:
Spraying is not an indicator of the sex of a cat, and even if it were, it is highly unusual for it to begin before a cat reaches adulthood. Further, spraying is a marking behavior or an expression of frustration. When simply emptying the bladder, BOTH male and female cats assume the same posture. They both squat to pee.
ALL cats have the potential to spray (male, female, intact or not). It seems to be more common for males, but not exclusive to males. But again, it usually begins in adulthood.
As far as what you actually saw when your cat was grooming, I think that it is too hard for us on the board to understand exactly what you saw because we're having some anatomical language problems understanding you :-) But don't panic, I bet your cat is fine and when you get to the vet's office next month you can directly point to where you saw this pink thing. At that time, during surgical checkin, the vet or technician will clear things up for you and it probably won't even charge you anything extra.
I will also say that it is highly unlikely that you saw the kittens belly button :-)

Take this stuff with a huge grain of salt. My neice got a kitten a number of years ago. She was convinced it was a female. The vet had to break the news to her that it was male.

I cannot tell you the number of cats I have heard of who have male names, with a Mrs. in the front on account of their sudden predilection for having kittens! It seems they were under the misconception that the cat was male until the point where it got pregnant!
Mind you, I remember also reading about a cat named Elizabeth who had to subsequently be renamed Uncle Elizabeth, heh.

Oh, that was from I Remember Mama, wasn't it? The cat was injured and the father tried to euthanize it with ether, but the ether just put the cat to sleep long enough for it to recuperate. Or maybe I'm wrong.

Is it ok to use my AM radio after NOON?

Or maybe I'm wrong. I do not honestly remember where I read it now. But I do remember an Anne of Green Gables book (Anne of the Island, I think) where that failed euthanization took place. There was a small hole in the box, and the chloroform leaked out, and after all that the cat went through, they would no longer hear of anything else being done to him and so he became a beloved, though raggedy and supremely ugly, idol of the household.

p.s. I cannot imagine an ugly cat. Seems like an oxymoron to me.

Barnabas Collins - 17 Sep 2006 17:28 GMT >Is it ok to use my AM radio after NOON? You do reakize AM stands for Amplitute Modulation and has nothing at all to do with time?
It's the type of signal having zip to do with time.
Maybe you should pick a book on radio some time.
