We bought 2 kittens from the same litter 1 male 1 female, 3 weeks ago.
Unfortunity the female got very ill and had to be put to sleep recently. We
really want to get a play mate for the male. Should we have another female or
a male????? Scooby Doo (the male) is ownly 6 weeks old.

Either or the kitten is so young a playmate of either sex makes no
difference
May I ask what was her illness that caused the problem. I am asking so just
in case it is not spread to another furball
I am sorry for your loss

I'm surprised, perhaps appalled, that someone would sell a kitten that is
only three weeks old. That is far too young of an age to be taken from its
mother.

From everything I hear kittens should be AT LEAST 8 weeks old before
being taken away from the mother!!

It is horrifying that these little kittens were separated from their mother
at such a young age. Eight weeks is the absolute minimum. It is much
better to wait 10 or 12 weeks. The original "owner" put these little kits
at risk. Please be sure to seek the advice from someone (possibly a vet)
who has experience in dealing with very young kittens.
I suggest a female playmate for the male kitten -- but *not* that young.
Wait a few weeks, then adopt (don't buy) another kitten to give yours a
companion.

Wow, I can't believe someone would adopt out two kittens at 3 weeks old!
That young, they're just barely learning to walk out of the nest on
their own. They couldn't possibly have been weaned that young, no wonder
the poor girl got sick.
I hope you talk to whoever adopted the kittens to you and let them know
it was too early and what happened to the female.
Hope the male is healthy!

In fact, I have been thinking about this and I wonder (and hope) if that age
is an error. The OP did not say anything about special feedings, and it
seems doubtful if either kitten would have survived without special care if
they were really separated from the mother at 3 weeks of age.

Are the sellers insane? did that not seem ridiculous to you? and you wonder
why one died?!!
They need their mother!

to be fair Danielle does not state if the kittens were actually taken from
their mother. Danielle could be waiting to pick up the male kitten any time
now (or within a matter of weeks)
