Our new cat, an ex stray growls an awful lot. I just ignore it, and nothing
happens.
She growls when I pick her up, when I wipe her bottom or coat (she's still
got this diarrhoea, but is being treated).
I've never heard a cat growl so easily. On the other hand once lifted up she
likes it and purrs when being held and stroked.
When do your cats growl?

Most of the females hiss, and occasionally growl when any other cat,
except perhaps a sibling or close friend, comes within her personal
space.  Most of the males growl when a non-resident or newly acquired
cat comes within their personal spaces.  The semi-resident cat
sometimes growls when picked up - as yours does - and even while he is
purring during grooming (which he clearly likes).

Rhythm is the only one to growl and she does it if she is feeling
protective over her hind quarters (I got her from t humane society when
she was 2 so I am not sure if her former owners used to hit her back there)

Over time though if I pet her/brush her hind end slowly, she is ok...its
the quick movements she lets me know she doesnt appreciate
