~*Connie*~ - 01 Aug 2006 00:01 GMT oh gosh, why limit yourself to two?? lol
Sorry. Couldn't resist. I am up to six cats at the moment (I foster for a shelter, and I failed miserably)
Honestly, I recommend cats in pairs. (or more) Why? cause they do get lonely. If you get kittens, they will be less destructive, if you get adults, then you can save a pair that were probably abandoned by someone who went into a nursing home, or because the owners died. A lot of shelters will work to keep 'families' together, but it is hard, as there is always a limit on resources.
Two cats aren't twice as much work as one.

I always had just one cat at a time and had no plans to change that (especially with Holly, previously known as "the black tornado" because she would instantly attack any other cat in my vicinity). Then I saw a picture of Duffy on Petfinder.com. He looked like such a little waif -- he reminded me of a little old man. He was blind, and I read that he had been returned to the shelter after *two years* and had been in a cage at the shelter for several months. Kitten season was approaching, and I knew there was every probability that he would not be adopted and that space would be at a premium for all those kittens. So, I decided to adopt and relied heavily from an Internet friend to walk me through the slow, gradual introduction process. The rest is history! Duffy is a delight (and turned out to be younger -- and much more beautiful -- than I expected from his shelter photo). He is a completely loving, wonderful cat; and he and Holly now get along very well together. It took time and patience but was *well worth* the time spent.
So, back to the original queston...by all means, adopt two, but also be willing to take time and patience for a "proper" introduction.

Ted Davis - 01 Aug 2006 02:30 GMT >oh gosh, why limit yourself to two?? lol Absolutely - for indoor cats, up to one per 100 square feet of floor space.
>Sorry. Couldn't resist. I am up to six cats at the moment (I foster for a >shelter, and I failed miserably) I have poor self control myself - I intended to stop at twelve, but somebody 'let our female have one litter before we have her spayed' (heard that before, haven't you?), and then had the problem of placing three of the resulting kittens. All are red tabby and one is female - I couldn't resist so I took them all to avoid too much separation shock on the nine-week old kittens. They are now sixteen weeks old and they latest pictures are linked from <http://users.wildblue.net/daviste/>.

The walsung kittens are way more destructive than any single kitten I've ever had.

I am up to six cats at the moment (I foster for a >shelter, and I failed miserably) I'm afraid if I tried this, I'd fail miserably, too. How do you handle the pet hair? I brush mine every morning (along with my Pug) and get a full brush or two every day. Very little dander, however.

I disagree with the two cat people. I used to have two cats and I had one that ran in attack mode 24/7 and the other one, who was getting up in years, was constantly being bombarded with attacks. Needless to say he did not like this and it was not unusual for the pair to wake me up at 2 AM. Awaking to loud cat screams at 2 AM is not fun.
The only exception *might* be if you adopt two from the same litter. It's going to be very hard to pick the right two so I say stick to one. I also don't believe that one cat gets lonely. Pokey.
MaryL - 06 Aug 2006 14:53 GMT >> When my Lucy goes to cat heaven, should I adopt one cat or two? > [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Pokey. Did you take the time to do a slow and careful introduction? This sounds like two cats that were just "thrown together" and expected to get along. That works with some cats but can lead to disaster with others. We used to call Holly "the black tornado" because she would immediately attack any other cat that came near me. I really didn't think I could adopt another cat with Holly, but I decided to try when I saw a picture of Duffy. He was blind and had been at the shelter for several months. After taking the more careful approach when I adopted Duffy, we have a happy household. Fastman® - 15 Aug 2006 07:35 GMT and decided that we all needed to know the following...
>>> When my Lucy goes to cat heaven, should I adopt one cat or two? >> [quoted text clipped - 23 lines] > >MaryL Have 2 six month old female Savannahs, not litter mates, but they bonded early, and now are inseparable.
I don't have the necessary time to devote each day to see that they get their play time in, so they use each other. It's a non stop scramble just to stay out of their way when I am at home!!
But when I want to play with them, they come a running to give respect to Alpha.
It is always best to have two of anything, except wives. LOL. HTH

Quantum Physics Product Warnings
As scientists and concerned citizens, we applaud the recent trend towards legislation which requires the prominent placing of warnings on products that present hazards to the general public. Yet we must also offer the cautionary thought that such warnings, however well-intentioned, merely scratch the surface of what is really necessary in this important area. We are therefore proposing new laws that will mandate the conspicuous placement of suitably informative warnings on the packaging of every product offered for sale in the United States of America. Our suggested list of warnings appears below.
1) WARNING: This product warps space and time in its vicinity.
2) WARNING: This product attracts every other piece of matter in the universe, including the products of other manufacturers, with a force proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the distance between them.
4) ADVISORY: There is an extremely small but nonzero chance that, through a process known as ``tunneling,'' this product may spontaneously disappear from its present location and reappear at any random place in the universe, including your neighbor's domicile. The manufacturer will not be responsible for any damages or inconveniences that may result.
5) READ THIS BEFORE OPENING PACKAGE: According to certain suggested versions of the Grand Unified Theory, the primary particles constituting this product may decay to nothingness within the next four hundred million years.
6) THIS IS A 100% MATTER PRODUCT: In the unlikely event that this merchandise should contact antimatter in any form, a catastrophic explosion will result.
7) PUBLIC NOTICE AS REQUIRED BY LAW: Any use of this product, in any manner whatsoever, will increase the amount of disorder in the universe. Although no liability is implied herein, the consumer is warned that this process will ultimately lead to the heat death of the universe
