Hello,

I need to get my cat's teeth cleaning and I've ran into a couple of
unpleassant surprises with vets in my area. My regular vet called me in
with a $100 offer. When I finally went in, the total was $650. Another
vet in my area gave me a $275-$350 estimate. Then just before I went
in, it jumped to $500 and the bastards had me already bring the cat for
a pre op consultation ($48). I'm really pissed now, it seems they are
all out to get as much money as they can.

Does anybody know a good vet in the San Francisco Bay Area? I'm really
tired of games.

Erasmo.

Have you tired Pets Unlimited? No personal experience, but neighbor
uses them.

Erasmo -

Getting a cats teeth cleaned is a pretty expensive procedure no
matter where you go. We adore our vet - they are in SF proper and they
are awesome, but they are not cheap. They are a strictly cat clinic.
They want to do a cleaning on our eldest cat - he is 13 but he has a
heart murmur and they wan to check his heart first. We are trying to
save up for it - aroun $600 for the heart u/s and cleaning. Anyway, its
expensive because of the cleaning procedure mixed with needing
anethesia. It really does suck though, if we didn't love them so darned
much!!!  *wink* anyway, I hope its not the same clinic - but try Nob
Hill Cat Clinic. That is who we use, and call a bunch of places for an
estimate, maybe one will stand out. Just don't compromise kitty's care
becuse of price. My .02 take it for what its worth....good luck!

Shahar,

I have a question. If my cat is 8yr old and in perfect health (no
overweight, not other problems other than tartar), is it really
necesary to have a bloodwork before the anesthesia?

Thx,

Erasmo.

This is making me glad I live in central Ohio.  I had my cat spayed and the
bloodwork, anesthesia, and actual spaying only cost $200.  And my vet is in
a privately owned, very nice office.  They're very nice people and they
always do an excellent job.  So, the cost being low isn't an indicator of
poor quality.  Wow...$600 for a heart check and teeth  cleaning?!?!?!

My oldest cat is in good health and the teeth cleaning was $641.00.
This is in a large east coast city in the US.   And that was with
her teeth being in fairly good shape.   I had a 19 year old male a
few years ago whose teeth were in much worse shape.

Yes.  They need the results to 1.  rule out underlying conditions they
need to look out for/diagnos prior to anesthesia.   2.  get blood
type, etc.

I just had my oldest cats teeth cleaned, she is in good health and
it cost more than that.   That actually is a good price.

Erasmo,

If the cat is over 5-6 years old they usually recommend
bloodwork - however, our vet only wanted it because of our very old (13
years) other medical issues. If he was younger and had no other health
concerns she would have just done the cleaning. She would however need
to do a exam to check on the overall health of the cat - a new patient
app't - to meet you and kitty, and decide - plus she'd want a copy of
any medical records for kitty from your other vet.

If you have any other questions about our vet we'd be happy to answer
them if we can!

Take care,

Shahar
