Our female cat, Lilo, has a favorite toy--a black, fluffy toy
mouse--she often carries it from room to room, while meowing
mornfully--it's enough to break your heart.

Any ideas as to what this meow means?  Could she be grieving lost
kittens from long ago?

We've got 2 other cats (male) who do not do this.

Anyone else have a cat who does this?--r3

I don't think cats mourn kittens from long ago.  That's probably just her
meow.  My cat sounds sad sometimes but that's just how it sounds to me.  She
does it when she wants food too.  I doubt cats mourn kittens they've had a
long time ago.

Sounds almost like she wants recognition for her "kill." Whenever my
formerly in/outdoor cats got a mole, squirrel, whatever, they would
bring the "gift" while making sure you aware of the nice present they
had just bestowed on you....

That is HILARIOUS! and so true....

It's very common behavior to present their "kill" to you--often with a very
loud, attention getting, almost crying meow--the sound is intended to catch
your attention and it does!

I have indoor only cats (well, they go out in the fenced cat-proofed yard
with supervision only) and they often come crying to us with a toy mouse, a
rubber ball (those little tiny super balls make GREAT toys if your cats
fetch) or the like, in their mouths, meouwing like it's a matter of life and
death. We have one that also does it after she uses the litterbox, and two
who often do it just after they wake up. Very amusing.  We imitate them and
meouw back at them and get quite a conversation going.

I once worked in a store where our "working cat" Bat, (a polydactyl kid with
7 on each front paw and 6 on each back paw) would often go out to play and
bring home a ground squirrel.  She'd sit at the back door and howl until
some unsuspecting incoming customer would take pity on her, not realizing
what she had in her mouth, and let her into the shop.  She'd trot to the
middle of the store with lots of loud but muffled meouws and when someone
finally looked to see why she was crying, she'd drop the ground squirrel for
us and we'd spend the next 20 minutes chasing the squinty through the store,
armed with fishnets--in and out of the stock rooms, dressing rooms, display
windows, basement, everywhere, trying to catch it to return it to the nearby
golf course. Quite the game!

Bottom line, praise her excessively and it will make her feel like a queen!

cheers!
