Hi, and sorry for the cross-posting; I'm just feeling a little desperate
here!

We have 3 cats, all of whom are indoor cats (downtown Manhattan, New York
City, friendly small-ish neighborhood). The only outdoor space they get to
use is the fire escape, which has no roof access. They can climb to the top
of the fire escape in our 4-story building and down to the 2nd, but unless
they jump down (which they have never done -- they're quite complacent and
ultra careful!) that's the extent of their outdoor life.  Usually they just
lie out there and enjoy the sun, and dart back indoors through the window.

Two days ago, one of them -- by far the most agile (but also the most timid
and nervous) simply disappeared. It makes no sense at all. We're in a super
busy street (a loud restaurant directly opposite has outdoor seating and
they routinely sit there and watch the cats for fun, till all hours, so a
cat falling from the 2nd floor wouldn't be missed; also, it's a very busy
pedestrian street, and this happened sometime during the day/evening).
Somebody would certainly have noticed if a cat fell or jumped. At night, we
always close the screens so the cats are indoors.

I'm sure there are those of you who feel that it's wrong to let a cat on a
fire escape, but they've been happily and safely doing this for 2 years.
Perhaps we should rethink this, but this is the cats' oasis of freedom in
the outside world. They ALWAYS come back and stand out there and meow if a
window is closed on one floor (even if they can easily get through an
upper-floor window).

We have posted missing-cat signs all over the neighborhood and have
canvassed the neighborhood; I have the cat on all the online shelter boards
(I get regular emails whenever a remotely similar cat shows up in any of the
boroughs) -- I have checked alleyways, everywhere, nearby parks, etc.

If anybody has any recommendations beyond what we have done, I would be
eternally grateful. I'll be hitting the shelters later this morning.  Oddly
enough, I found a friend's dog last year after 4 days of searching --
through some weird little website that I almost passed by because it looked
so insignificant. But no such luck yet with our cat.

On a much more sinister note, what happens if a cat is found run over or
something? Is there any kind of registry to check?  I haven't found anything
online, and much as I hope and still believe that we'll find our cat or that
he'll come back any day now, I would want to know if something has happened
to him. Does anybody know what happens when somebody finds a cat who's been
run over (or met some other kind of fate)? It would be pretty awful to
fathom that they'd just be disposed of without some kind of report?

Any help would be much appreciated. The cat is 3 years old and very timid.

Thanks in advance for any advice/answers anybody can provide!

Have you turned your flat UPSIDE DOWN?  Our 3 cats CAN AND WILL hide from
us, leaving us no chance of finding them.  4 or 5 hours later they turn up
fine....my three are indoor only too.

Gary

Yes, we have, unfortunately. They do have their usual hiding places but have
NEVER been gone this long. This one is particularly fond of my boyfriend and
will sit on him any time he's in the house, so it's almost impossible that
he could be in the same building and not have made an appearance in 2 days
(the cat, that is). But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll emerge
somehow and will now go out for a dawn walk again.
Thanks so much for your reply.

When it comes time for the cat to go to the vet you find it amazing
how the cat found a tardis to utilize to disappear from site.

Never ceases to amaze me.

Was the cat chipped?

My kitten is indoor only but is chipped.   You never know when you
have  fires/hurricanes/tornadoes/etc.

I agree. On two or three occasions, my cat went missing on me. One day,
I didn't even realize the cat was missing and I left for work, then I
went out to dinner with some friends after work. I returned home twelve
hours later to find my cat stuck in a dresser drawer in my bedroom where
I keep some t-shirts. The drawer was closed, and I have no clue how she
got in there, but I heard her crying for help as soon as I returned
home. My cat is solid white and the shirts were mostly dark colors, so I
can't imagine how I did not notice her climb into that drawer, but there
she was when I opened it!

I had something similar happen with my cat. Middle of winter, came home put
my jacket in the closet and went to watch TV. About an hour later I heard
this tiny little whining noise coming from somewhere. Went to search and
found my Deetoo in the closet. The next time I came home and opened the
closet door, I watched her zip into the closet in a flash. Even when I was
watching for her, it was amazing to see how fast she got in there.

Which is why we removed all closet doors in our house, and replaced them
with curtains (as seen on Trading Spaces, Clean Sweep, etc., etc.).  If the
cats can go in there all the time, it is no longer alluring for them.

I considered something like that, but because of her interest in climbing
shower curtains, window curtains and any other material she can sink her
claws into, I gave up on the idea. I replace the shower curtains every three
or four months when they start leaking water all over the bathroom floor.

That's a good point. The second day I brought my cat home from the animal
shelter, she climbed into a slightly open access panel in the bathroom I'd
ignored for 16 years. She was in there for 20 minutes while I was cursing
and thinking of calling the fire department.
