I am having quite a problem getting fleas off my three adult cats and
out of my home. All are only indoor house cats.
After using shampoo several times, flea carpet powder and vacuuming
daily. I did that for a few weeks and not getting any kind or handle on
the fleas. I decided to use someone's suggestion, for the first time
on Tuesday night 6-27-06 I used ADVANTAGE for cats on all 3 of them. It
was 8:30 pm, its now been over 24 hours & they are all still itching
slightly. Yesterday they seem more sluggish and were sleeping a bit
more than normal, but have very healthy appetites when eating and
drinking.. they seem to be fine now though... I got it on-line since my
vet wanted way more than I could afford for get for 3 cats....
My concern is that about 17 days ago I applied hartz flea drops one
time at night. I was reading through some more on flea control and not
realizing until after that it was so harmful. All 3 have not had any
signs of a reaction yet, but the stuff was not working to kill the
fleas. The next morning I bathed them with dawn then bathed them again
2 days later and a 3rd time last weekend. I have read so many people
have had horror stories with that stuff..
I talked with my vet this afternoon and she reassured me on the hartz
stuff. Stating that if something were to happen it would have with in 3
to 48 hours after application. Delayed reactions weren't something I
should worry about, especially since is been over 2 weeks now. This
stuff is fast acting and can be lethal if not treated promptly. She
also said that I was one of the lucky ones, most peoples pets end up
very very sick from that stuff...
Im still really worried though..should I be?? Despite my vets opinion..
Has anyone ever had a cat have a reaction after this long of time has
passed??...Im guessing that the baths would have washed off anything
that was left on the skin and fur..
Please im not sure what to do!!

your vet has a LOT of experience in this. Any reaction they were going to
have was going to happen pretty quickly. So at this point, stop treating for
fleas for at LEAST three weeks if not four. No powders, or sprays or bombs.
The cats have been exposed to enough chemicals. Keep vacuuming your house
and removing the bag
Frontline and advantage, sold only at the vet by the manufacturer for safety
sakes, are highly counterfeited. So much so that Frontline changed its
packaging a while back to help make it more difficult. For the most part
the doses are around 10-15$ for a dose that lasts a month - frontline treats
fleas for up to THREE MONTHS! (bold to make sure that is seen cause very few
people notice that fine print on the package) If you buy it on line, you
aren't saving that much money, and you have the worry that the product might
not be real. Also, frontline has the promotion if you buy six doses you get
the seventh for free.
(if the manufacturers only sell to vets, how do these on line places get it?
Vets that sell directly to them and counterfeiters. Any vet found to sell
to these on line places will loose their contract to sell it to their
patients. - info directly from a merial representative)
