When I go to sleep, sometimes I'll wake up and my cat will be standing over
me. If I sleep on my side, she stands on my arm. If I sleep on my back,
she'll be on my chest. Kind of like "standing guard". I don't know why she
would do this. I've had her for almost a week now. (she's 8 weeks old). Does
this happen to anyone else? It's not a problem at all, I kind of take it as a
compliment. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Could
this be a problem, or could she be trying to tell me something? I don't know.
Thanks a lot!!!!!!

Take it as a compliment because it is! When my cat finds me lying down,
she jumps up and walks on me towards my face until our faces are about
6" apart, as if to say hello for 1-2 minutes. Then she turns around,
walks back and lies down on my legs. This is also when she feels safes
and sleeps most soundly. It is heartwarming. The only problem is when I
have to get up for some reason. I have learned to arrange my phones
around me, so it is just my bathroom visits that annoy her. :)

More to the point the cat is saying enough sleeping, time to get up
and feed me.
The cat is also saying that even though it sleeps 18 hours you've
slept enough and need to get up now and the feed the cat.
Cats are really good at doing this espeically at 4 in the morning.

>walks back and lies down on my legs.
She has given up trying to wake you up and settles for
getting some shut eye.

I agree. I _LOVE_ it when Zeitgeist decides it's time for us to wake up
and starts to meow constantly until I get up too, regardless of how many
times I put the pillow over my head.

I have one that will start chewing on my hand and the longer it takes
her to get me up the harder she bites!!

"Feed me Seymour."
My cats have always done it.

Mine sometimes comes and sleeps on my chest when I'm sleeping.
The best part is when I'm sleeping and he jumps up on the bed, slaps me
in the face with his paw and runs off. It gets really fun after the
third or forth time in an hour he does this; although it usually gets
him banished from the bedroom for the rest of the night.

My cat has always done this he wants his food or to go out. In the morning
he gets agitate and if standing on me does not get me up he will the make a
noise and climb on to the dressing table and start to knock things over. My
alarm clock has to be kept on the floor and another trick is to jump on my
head off the headboard.
My other cat is the complete opposite.

When my two year old male decides it's time for me to wake up he vigorously
licks my forehead. I can stand it about a minute before his raspy tongue
will actually break the skin. If I turn over he just continues from the
other side. If I shout loudly to stop he'll stop and then resume when he
thinks I'm asleep. I can't win!

I also take it as a compliment. My cats don't just stand on me (as you
described), but both will walk back and forth on me, often do some kneading,
and then lie down. I sometimes wake up and find a cat sound asleep on top
of me -- and the cat managed to do that without my even being aware of it.

Mine kneads too a few times a day, about 1-2 minute each time, both
when I am sitting and lying. I have been wondering what that is about.

Please be careful when you snip messages not to snip the name of the person
sending the post. In this case, you included one paragraph from me and one
paragraph from Kiran -- so it looks like the entire message was mine. (No
harm done because these were pretty "routine" messages...but there have been
some flame wars when it would be a lot better to have the correct names
attached.) Of course, my request can get a bit hard to follow in some of
those very long threads when there are numerous names mixed at the top of
the message!!

As I see it Kiran was quoted as saying "Mine kneads too a few....." and MaryL
was quoted as saying "I also take it as a complement.....". I'm befuddled as
to where there is any confusion regarding attribution.

The confusion is that I did *not* post the following: "Mine kneads too a
few times a day, about 1-2 minute each time, both when I am sitting and
lying. I have been wondering what that is about." That was actually posted
by Kiran, but only my name was left in the attribution. Only the first
paragraph was mine. As I said, it's not a big deal in this case.

Incidentally, you *did* read the attribution correctly, so apparently I am
reading it differently. I think the primary difference is that my e-mail
was included, while Kiran's was not.

And you would admit to that in the newsgroup

Mine also. He weights about 12 lbs and at first he will walk across the bed.
Then he "accidently" steps on me while doing it. Then, if I don't get up, he
will sometime lay down on me. One time I was sleeping on my back, woke up,
and his face was about 6" away from my face. Scared the crap out of me!
