Hello everyone,

I am so glad I found this forum. I hope to get some advice on a health
problem that my 6 yr old cat may be having. He is usually a big eater and for
the past 4-5 days he has not eaten normally at all. He usually eats 2-3 cans
and now he does not even eat one per day. He is also very inactive and does
not move around much at all. We took him to the vet and they did an
ultrasound and all the bloodwork. $300 later and he came back with no
problems. They think it might be some kind of inflammation in his stomach and
they prescribed some medicine to help with his eating and some Pepcid AD. He
does not eat the Pepcid but he does like the prescription. He has been using
the litter and there is no vomitting or diarrea. He did eat a little
yesterday. He seems to be having trouble moving around and can't put pressure
on his abdomen like to bend down to eat.

To add to our misery we have had a summer trip planned and he will be home by
himself for a month. We left today. We have hired a pet sitter who will be
checking on him every other day. We have also asked a friend to check on him
everyday until he shows signs of improvement. Less than a month ago he had a
full checkup and he was given a clean slate of health and his vaccines. He is
a little overweight which the vet warned about.

Could this be just a tummy ache? What do you suggest? Has anyone had this
kind of an issue before? I would really appreciate the help.

You really need to get your cat to the vet. Pronto! Seriously, taking
the trouble now might spare you a great deal of heartache later. Just
take him to the vet as quickly as possible and let us know how it goes.

Steve, take a look at the first paragraph again -- the cat has been to
the vet and had several tests.

To pf, you know something is obviously wrong and your first vet was not
able to find it. I would get a second opinion. I don't think your cat
should be alone right now, some important symptoms might be over-looked.
Could the cat stay with your friend?

We had a sick cat whose stomach hurt, in fact he was miserable. He also
developed a high fever. His case turned out to be pancreatitus. It's
hard to diagnose, but an internist was able to spot all of the signs on
an ultrasound.

That's one thing you might try if vets cannot find the problem -- an
internist vet. You usually need a referral from your regular vet.

By the way, did the vet do a thorough look at his teeth? Those can cause
some real problems with eating, and ill-health in general.

Good luck,

Rhonda

Thank you for your help Rhonda. I would imagine that the vet checked him for
a fever. I will have to make sure though. Also, what was the treatment for
the pancreatitus?

Bob also had diabetes, so was definitely having pancreas problems.

The pancreatitus treatment was basically supportive care
(hospitalization, IV, force-feeding.) It's been a few years, but I think
the medication he was on during attacks was metronidizole. It was an
antibiotic that was to help the internal swelling too, I believe.

When he was back in control, we had to change his food to IVD brand,
which is an allergy-type food. It had very few ingredients and none of
the normal proteins or starches in cat foods.

Be careful not to diagnose him over the internet like this, but it might
be a condition to ask the vet about. I still wonder if there was a
thorough check of your cat's teeth.

Hope you can find out what's wrong.

Get a second opinion-take a copy of your bloodwork with you to second
opinion Vet.
Get an xray of abdomen-looking for foreign bodies - string etc.
Get a urinalysis to make sure cat is not blocked (slightly or fully)
causing abdomenal discomfort and difficulty urinating and decreased
appetite.

Good luck,
