Fire Dept doesn't help Cats

Firemen coming out to rescue a cat stuck in a tree appears to only be something
that happens in the movies and on TV.
I am resident of Coats, NC. On Sunday evening 2-29-04 I found that my cat  had
climbed to the top of tree.  On Monday morning my cat was still in the tree
frantically meowing for help. I called the Coats Fire Department and Animal
Control to ask for help. Animal Control says there is nothing that they can do,
the Coats Fire Department refused to offer any help saying that they do not
rescue pets.
The cat is still stuck in the tree. I have some photos of the cat in it's
predicament. If you would like to view them, and possibly offer a suggestion on
how to get the cat down go to:

Regrettably many fire departments will not rescue pets.  It has been
suggested the personal approach is best - going in person ot a fire
station is more likely to get help than ringing up and asking
officially.

There is a little section on my Catpage which might include some ideas
you find helpful.

a) call her
b) call her and shake the goodies box
c) climb up there yourself

Here the person who calls the fire brigade because of a cat has to pay ...
smart cat of someone else's left as soon as it was rescued ... LOL

To be honest: This has happened to me before, but b) worked, thankfully

Poor thing. He's really high up there. The tree looks too skinny to climb.
Maybe you can call a tree trimming service. They have these guys who can scurry
up any tree. There's always a cherry picker but that would be expensive. I wish
I had better suggestions.

Maybe you could coax the cat part way down the tree. Use an orchard ladder
to get ahold of the cat and safely return him to the ground. We've had to do
this many times and we've got some big fir trees out front.

Years ago when I used to paint houses...
there was a kitten up in the tree crying for hours!

One of my partners eventually took it down...
but a few minutes later...it went right back up...so
we just ignored it...

eventually it jumped down...
cats have no ability to climb down ...so they have to jump.

I finally got the cat down. I taped a towel to a long pole and climbed to the
top of my 28ft ladder. I tried this for a few hours last night but it didn't
work. After trying for few hours today I was able to convince the cat to come
down by putting the towel were the cat was able to use it for footing.

The cats name is Snickers.
Snickers managed to make it as a topic of discussion on local talk radio.
The show is on right now, runs from 3pm to 6pm EST. They already talked about
it on air and they are having a poll as to whether or not the local fire
department should rescue the cat.

Here it is on their website.

GOOD GOD that cat was HIGH up there!!!  I am amazed that you got it down. It
really is a MYTH that all cats in trees will eventually come down. some do,
but some others come down the hard way; dying due to dehydration and
starvation. You might want to check out this link;

I'm glad to hear you got the cat down ...poor baby (but lucky, too).

If this happens again and you have trouble getting the cat down, I would
suggest that you contact a tree service.  It will cost some, but they have
the right equipment and skills to get into the "upper reaches" of trees.

Thank goodness...
It was sure up pretty high!   I hope kitty does not try that one again!

Great news!

My suggestion would have been this one:
A brave boy from the neighbourhood who would do it for some pocket money?
(Don't forget to stand underneath with a mattress, in case the mother
objects...)

You're going to be a responsible pet owner now and keep your cat INSIDE so
it won't happen again, right?

Everything is money, politics and policies and procedures and lawsuits nowdays.
The fire department is not going to do a single thing that is not required in
thier policies and procedures.

So, you have no tree climbing pre teen or teenage boys?

How about hiring a roofer who has a big ladder, he will get the cat for you.
Or, a tree surgeon, they have ladders, too.

I got a cat out of a tree in the woods one time, that was an un climbable tree.
No lower limbs, and sparse ones near the top.
I picked up a downed sapling that had to have been over twenty feet long, and,
old and dry. I put the springy end of it under the cat's fat a.s and gave it a
shove. the cat came flying out of the tree and landed in the soft leaves and
soft dark dirt of the forest without injury.
