My Sam loves to tip over the waste baskets and check out the contents and does this
ymphteen times a day and if the is anything in them drags it out.

Any suggestions for something to spray on or put in them to make him dislike them please.

I strap the cans to the wall/cabinet with bungee cords.

Appreciate reply but as stated in original post am looking suggestions for something to
spray on or put in them to make him dislike them please.

I know I can put in cabinet or fashion to wall / cabinet but that is not what I asked.  I
am looking suggestions for something to spray on or put in them to make him dislike them
please.

TIA

Most people would rather solve the real problem (tipping over the
trash) rather than specify that the only allowed solutions must
involve stinking up the house and annoying the cat.

Well, when my boys wanted to jump into the garbage can in the bathroom,
I'd pluck them out and set them in a shower... that quick that behavior
real quick.  However, with other cans, I've discovered that they are
looking for something in particular... plastic, my one cat loves
plastic, he likes to eat it, which is very bad, and so I put all
plastic items in either the bathroom can or kitchen (they don't touch
that one either).  Once they realize they can't get what they want,
they stopped tipping them over (mostly, lol).

I've tried citrus and bitter apple, my cats like it... I have no luck.

LOL.  Why doesn't this surprise me?  (after reading Scratching Everything!).

Bitter Apple from pet store.  But instead of having to spray your
wastebaskets constantly, I would just go and buy some that have a lid on them.

Get some "bitter apple" spray.  It smells nice and cats hate it (they don't
like the smell that much and the hate the taste).  Most pet shops carry it,
and it's perfectly safe.

Thanks for suggestion on bitter apple.  Will give it a try.

If it were my cat doing that; I would go to the local toy store and
pick up a plastic squirt gun.  When the cat knocks over the trash can I
would squirt him with it.  The next time the cat goes for the trash can
I would pick up the squirt gun and the cat would see it and run and
hide.  After a short while the cat would realize the knocking over the
trash cans behavior would no longer be tolerated.  You would usually
only have to spray the cat one time; they quickly figure out that being
sprayed by water is not a lot of fun.  I don't think the punishment is
overly cruel, I've never had to use it on my cats more than one time;
cat's don't like water but it's not like I'm spraying them with hot oil
or something.
