Flea collars are not safe, and over-the-counter flea preparations should
also be avoided. Instead, please see your vet for a preparation such as
Advantage or Frontline. They are effective, much safer, and only need to be
administered once a month.

Yes, definitely go with a treatment from the vet. I use frontline. It
comes in a little bottle that you squeeze onto the back of the cat's neck
once a month. My vet offers them for $10 a bottle or if you buy a three
month supply, $7 a bottle. Your vet may offer something similar. It's
worth it to me to not have to worry about whether or not it is safe for my
cat.

Definitely skip the collar. They're full of toxins and actually don't even
work very well. They can also cause irritation on the cat's neck. I would
go with the treatments instead.

I totally agree. Some cats have actually died from flea collars. That
shocked me! So, I took my cats to the vet and they were treated with
Frontline. It's safe, immediately effective, kills fleas even in the home
(cat hairs will retain the product and when the cat sheds throughout the
house it causes fleas to die). Each treatment lasts a month. Plus, it's only
$30! You get enough to treat the cat for 3 months, that's $10/month.
Granted, a flea collar is only a few dollars, but Frontline won't make your
cat sick! How would you feel if you wore a chemical necklace? What a leap
forward Frontline is! I totally recommend it : )
