Can someone please tell me the best way to keep cats away from my property?
I know this is a sensitive topic in such a nice group but I am counting on
the wonderful people that can offer some helpful hints with this. I love all
animals and would have as many cats as I could provide for and mine would be
the best and happiest cats in the world. However I have others in my area
that are not as considerate or totally unaware. I have a deck in my back
yard that has turned into orgy of off hour feline leftovers that have made
this almost inhabitable. I have given up trying to live with the stench and
late night brawls but refuse to resort to any strong uncertain measures. The
best response I get is to get a dog. Is there a gentile approach or some
harmless agent I can place in a strategic locations that will tell these
creatures they would be happier elsewhere?

Thanks for any responses. Flames accepted as I fully understand the feeling
of all cat lovers.

Regards.

Thank you very much. I feel dumb now for not trying the pet store first. I
would rather use a spray I guess. I wonder which would be less harassing to
the animal a smell or a noise.

Thanks again.

The sonic repeller does not  hurt them it emits electronic chirps in a
certain direction like a security light so you can aim it to only cover your
deck or a certain area I use a inside version to prevent the cats from
coming anywhere near a door that leads outside.
I use one outside near the garbage cans to keep the stray dogs and raccoons
out of them   they go a running when they come into range

Wow, that is great. Do they have an adult human version?

We use this cat spray stuff that I picked up at Walmart.  It's to keep cats
away from plants and shrubs - indoors and out.  We had some problems with
our cat digging around in our indoor house plants, so I picked some of this
stuff up hoping it would work.  It's safe for animals and people, and I just
sprayed our plants and haven't had a problem with the cat anymore.
It is for indoor and outdoor use, so maybe try some cat repellant spray.
Maybe spray it around your property a bit, or where the  major problems
spots tend to be.
I find the smell to be kind of offensive at first, but it clears up in the
house within about 10 minutes.  I also find that it leaves a mist in the
whole house from spraying (it comes in a spray bottle similar to a hairspray
bottle) and I have found I taste it, even in the living room if sprayed in
the kitchen (next room over) but no more than 10 minutes later, it's fine
and gone.  I find I spray all the plants in the house about 1 time a month
and that seems to be enough to keep our cat out of the plants.
Not sure how long a spray would last outdoors, but maybe once every 2 weeks
or so, or maybe just as needed?
The bottle of this stuff was cheap - about 7ish bucks.  It's lasted now for
about a month or so, and we've barely knocked on the bottle.  We do have an
entire living room crowded with plants.

I'm not really a cat lover, but I'm far from a cat hater.  I don't mind our
cat, nor do I mind other peoples' cats - as long as other people control
their animals.  We had some problems with random cats in the neighbourhood -
both pets and strays - pissing and messing in the kids' sand box in our back
yard.  I do NOT like these cats OR the owners of these wandering, messy,
not-controlled cats.  I just don't like having my kids come in the house to
say they don't want to play out in the sand box because it smells like a cat
box, nor do I love the surprise of finding cat sh*t in my flower beds.
Maybe try the spray.  You're entitled to love, like, hate or not mind cats,
or any animal, and you're also entitled to not want (liked or unliked)
animals in your yard or on your property!

Thanks. My feelings are similar. I have been deprived of one of my true
loves because of cats and their domestic habits. I enjoy the wildlife
frolics of chipmunks and other more friendly and less vane creatures that I
find far more responsive than someone else's cat that's for sure. These cats
and their stench have driven away this enjoyment to say nothing about the
birds they dismember. Maybe I can get my chipmunks to sit still while I give
them a shot of this wonder spray ;)

Yea, nothing better than getting up on a beautiful, sunny morning, stepping
out to get the mail and a breath of fresh air and finding dead birdie on
your step that some gracious cat brought you as a lovely gift ;)  Not to
mention flower beds (or sand boxes) turned into cat boxes...  It's lovely to
sit out in the yard on the deck and maybe have a bbq and enjoy nice weather
outside while you eat your burgers with the smell of random cats all around
you.  It's disgusting.  My cat uses a litter box.  I clean that out so I,
and the rest of the world, don't have to smell kitty stench.
Years ago, when I lived at my parents' place and was about 15, there was
this one stray dog that kept coming in our yard and would sit and bark to no
end at my dog... This little rat dog (I am NOT a huge fan of small dogs,
especially small yappy ones that wander about the neighbourhood, and right
into our yard) would sit in the yard, on the grass and bark at my dog in her
kennel if we weren't outside, or would have the audacity to come in the yard
and bark at my dog chained up when we were even outside.  You'd go after the
dog and it would growl, bear its teeth and bark at you.  My brother claims
it snapped at him, but I don't know.  I finally had enough of this dumb mutt
and took the hose to it.  It eventually stopped coming around and torturing
my dog, who was ALWAYS outside (the good part of giant dogs!)
I was tempted to let my dog off her chain or out of her kennel to roam our
yard and eat this little dog, but my dog would constantly jump the 6' fence
around the yard... 6' tall fence in the back yards are the max allowed in
the city where my parents live...  I was really glad when that dog stopped
coming around... So, yes, I know how frustrating it can be for someone else
to allow their pets to do whatever they want, whenever they want and
wherever they want.  I'd spray my yard in your case.  Maybe even spray the
bird bath to help the birds ;) lol  Not sure if that would work or not...
buuut... lol
Cats are great animals if a lot of irresponsible owners could manage to mind
their own animals and understand that even if the neighbours love cats, not
everyone wants their yard to become someone elses' cat's playground/battle
ground.

The flower beds mix some tobacco dust into it IME cats don't like the smell
neither do insects or raccoons at least here in Florida

Be sure to check on whether the tobacco dust will be toxic to some of the
*plants* you want to preserve.  It is safe with most plants but will kill or
stunt others (tomatoes, for example -- although there I have moved into
veggies instead of flowers).

Harmless, but cats hate it.

I just picked up a can today at Wal-Wart for about $8. I sprayed my deck
but I am wishing I had a can and a paint brush. I am hoping it does not keep
away the squirrel that has been visiting the jar of peanuts I put out. I
just moved into this neighborhood and like to make new friends. Here are a
few I left behind at my last place.

Be careful of the squirrel.  I  had one get in my 100+ year old house
and get into a fight with my indoor cats.

They had to get booster rabies shots.

I guess I have been lucky all these years. I have had many wild animals eat
out of my hand. I have only been nibbled on by chipmunks when I don't let go
of the peanuts. The worse animal bite I ever had was from a Syrian Hamster
that smelled another one on my hand and bit to the bone. Would not let go
until I whipped my hand several times. She landed back in her tank and I
bled for hours and still have the scar. At least with wild animals it's all
about food and they rarely bite the hand that feeds them.

But, an animal is still an animal.  Even the nicest pet is still an animal.
To this day, I still don't trust the cat or the dog around the children
without being supervised.  The cat sleeps in our room, the dog in his
kennel.  I just don't trust them, even though we've had the cat since the
day she was born (she was one of a litter of kittens our other cat that we
used to have had) and this cat is pretty much used to being nearly mauled to
death.  Has yet to bite or use her claws on anything, furniture excluded,
but still, she's still an animal, and not one born and raised in the wild.
Normally, though, wild animals, as in the case with small little chipmunks
or whatever, they will run away in fear before biting or attacking out of
fear ;)  Plus, they're just sooo cute!

I enjoy interacting with chipmunks the most of all.

They even play well with other animals.

This was my last place. Nothing at the new location yet. Just one big cat
that belongs to the people next door. That thing rules. I see it roaming all
over the hood. Nice cat actually. It feels comfortable rubbing itself on my
leg without even an introduction. I'll have to shoot it and post a link to
the pic. ;)

I haven't tried them, but I have read good reports of some motion-detector
sprayers.  They are connected (like a sprinkler) to your outdoor faucet, and
the range and sensitivity can be adjusted for your specific needs (small or
large animals, for example).

Here are two:

Havahart Spray Away:

Also, do you already have a fence around your yard.  If so, I have seen
pictures of attachments for the top of a fence.  They have to be placed
around the entire area and would be angled in (toward your yard) to keep
your cats "in" or angled out to keep other cats "out."

Wow, those are great. Nice idea. I live in a condo development so that
would be out but I am now thinking of rigging something up myself. I have
Motion Detection devices along with Surveillance camera and DVR card on PC
so I can see and record everything so now I will have to rig some covert way
to scare the animal.

Cats get free roam while dogs are confined. If all things were equal there
would be no problem. Except for the cats that is. I was actually thinking of
getting a trap and putting it with the cat in it on the neighbors door step.
A trap to get rid of pests. But then I would have to get one big enough for
the neighbor the following day.
