So, my cat's behavior is a little different. he is a neutered male and shows
A LOT of aggression towards me (the female of the house) but he does drag my
sweatshirts or sweaters (and only mine) into the bathroom_ he drags them
between his legs with his butt down and a very noticeable purr (about the
only time he purrs real loud). Everything I've learned so far indicates he
is masturbating. could this be the same?

Could be. Sachi sometimes grabs the nape of my other cat's neck that
looks like mating behavior but she gets mad at him. I don't know if
you have another cat at all but if not then I guess since he doesn't
have another cat to try to mount your sweaters/shirts are the
substitute. ;-) The good news for me is that Sachi has stopped this
behavior. I guess kicking him out of the room a few times has gotten
the message across.
Crazy cats.
