Well she has been with us for 3 weeks now.I bought her at a pet shop and she
was declawed on four feet and neutred. She was really shy at first and
wouldn't eat or drink. Now she is great and eating prescription diet and
drinking (from the toilet bowl).

One thing though. She will come up to me stay on my lap purr and suckle on
my robe but the minute my husband is around she goes into hiding. He loves
the cat and wishes she could be closer to him. I wonder how to get those two
together.

She's declawed on all 4 feet?  Wow, poor thing.  Think you should close the
top to the toilet, too much bacteria and possible remnants of toilet bowl
cleaner.  Just give her a bowl of water.

Could have never lived with a man before or could have been abused by one.
It'll just take time.

Two suggestions: First, have your husband feed her--cats like the
person who puts the kitty food in their dish. Second, have your husband
wear a garment (sweatshirt, etc.) that has your scent. She'll make the
connection between him and "the smell of the nice lady."

Basically, it will take time for her to trust him, especially if she's
been abused by a man in the past, or if she equates him with the vet
who declawed her. Your husband should let the kitty be the one who
makes the first move to be friends.  Good luck with your new addition!

You do realize there are women vets?
CadillacWoman - 28 Mar 2006 23:11 GMT
Yep, in fact my kitties now have a woman vet, but the majority of vets
I've encountered have been male.

Actually around here i've found the majority of vets are women.

Declawed, and on all her feet?  Poor, poor thing...
Also, I'll assume you had *her* spayed.  He would have been neutered, she
would have been spayed.

Could be that it took her time to adjust to a new home and people.  She just
might have been nervous and sketchy and not wanting to eat.  If she's eating
now, that's great.  I'd also close the toilet seat and not allow for her to
drink from the bowl.  That's just gross and dirty.
Offer her a bowl of water, and maybe even try, for the first little while,
to get her to drink out of it by putting it on the closed toilet seat or
right beside the toilet.  Slowly move her bowl until it is with her food,
wherever that may be in your home.  I assume you don't feed her in the
bathroom!

Some cats just don't take to some people.  She very well could have been
abused or mistreated by a male in her past.  She also might not have ever
had any contact with a male yet, if she was handled by pet store staff who
are female or if the vet was female.  Someone said also that she could
possibly associate your husband with the vet, if your vet is male, as being
the one that fixed her and declawed her.  I would go with the suggestion of
having your husband feed her and maybe even have him have your scent on him
for the cat to get used to him.  I wouldn't force the cat to sit with him,
nor would I have him chase afer her, as this might pose as a threatening
thing for the cat and cause her to have a valid, yet unnecessary fear, of
your husband.  Take it slow and allow the cat to get used to your husband.
Chances are, it's nothing at all personal against your husband.  Some cats
are just like that where they love the male/female/child in the house, or
hate that person!
