I posted last week about having a lot of feral cats around my house.   I and
a few other neighbors feed them.   When I called the local animal shelter,
the person I talked to didn't have any advice for me about getting them
neutered.   So my husband used a live animal trap and got a female that I
suspect is pregnant.   He took her to the shelter and obviously different
people there told him about the neuter scooter that goes around to towns in
the Midwest and neuters animals for $20(includes shots) for feral cats and
$50 for tame ones.  My husband knew how bad I felt about taking the cat to
the shelter so he told them that he would bring her back to our neighborhood
and we would get her neutered.   They went to get her out of the cage and
she escaped.   She was in a fenced in area so they felt they would catch
her.   They were supposed to call when they caught her.   They never called.
Meanwhile I checked the neuterscooter website and they weren't scheduled to
be in our town for a couple of months.   Too long for a pregnant cat.   So
we just let it go.   Well 6 days later the cat was back on my porch very
hungry but no worse for wear.   This cat walked 5 miles and crossed a four
lane very busy highway.   I went back to the website and found a town that's
about 30 miles away and made an appointment to take her in a couple of
weeks.    I don't know how many of her 9 lives that she used but one thing's
for sure...she's earned the right to stay.   You always hear about cats
walking long distances to get home but I've never had it happen first hand.
I still have several more cats to get neutered but I will get them all
eventually......June

Amazing. She deserves the very best of care and support. I wonder how
she could find her way over such a great distance without any scent
trail we can imagine (obviously you drove her to the shelter)? Can she
smell her "home" from so far away?

My brother received a cat that was either going to live in another home or
be put down.

Its origional owner was moving to a place where he wasn't allowed to have
pets.

This cat was taken from the construction site where they both worked and was
placed in the enclosed back of my brothers truck covered with a towel to
keep it warm and driven fifty miles to my brothers place.

One day it disappeared and two weeks later showed up at his origional home
having crossed two major highways and swam across a fairly wide stream.

My theory about this is that animals have a number of direction finding aids
such as: The arch of the sun, extremely accute sense of smell and hearing
that allows them to smell the molds and bacteria in the air, and some
animals are known to be able to follow the magnetic lines of the earth.  My
guess is that they are able to take fixes via the sounds and wind blown
smells they are amiliar with.
