Hi -

My 12-14 yr old neutered tom has lost a lot of weight over the past 6
mths, and been eating less and less. For the last couple of days he has
hardly eaten anything, and seems very lacklustre, asleep nearly all the
time.

The vet has run std blood tests (kidney/liver disease, etc), cannot find
any sign of tumour or constipation etc, and we are waiting for a thyroid
test.

i very much doubt this is a thyroid problem - any ideas?

my folks have a cat we thought we were going to
lose her last test they did was thyroid, and now
the cat takes methimazole or whatever it is,
keeping her alive.  Cat experience was similar to
yours.  For your sake i hope it's a thyroid thing
cause at least medicine can treat it, and i'm
guessing thyroid problems is fairly common for cats.

If the test comes back negative i'd think about seeing another vet.

Something is obviously wrong.

Thanks for the responses - any other ideas? I wondered if it might be
flu/virus of some kind? He just refused steak (I'm desperate!) but ate
some tinned salmon. This could be pricy ...

Hey, this ng has more than its share of trolls, eh!

best

Nick:

What kind of shape are his teeth in? If it hurts to chew....

Excellent.  Never thought of that one.

Make sure he eats something; if he stops eating, he can get hepatic lipidosis:

Was stool checked for parasites?  Kidney values were definitely okay?
Checked for anemia?  Heart checked?

hi how are you?

My neighbor's cat had similar symptoms due to a stroke caused by the
heat and my own cat had a stroke with an unknown cause with similar
symptoms. A stroke could be your answer except for the fact that it is
usually easily diagnosed. Get a second opinion from another vet.
