Insulted by attitude towards cats on CSI

Tonight's episode of CSI... yet another example of how cats are treated
in the media that ticks me off.  The attitude portrayed towards the
cats in this show are as if they are no more than vermin, mere
things...to be sneered at and shuddered at, annoyances at best, to be
caged up and hauled off to who cares where.  There is no empathy
towards them whatsoever... feeding into the idea and promoting the idea
that its OK to not feel anything for them.

I am no fogey and we have 12 happy kitties in our household.  If we
could, we would care for more.  When I get old, and if I find myself
alone, I guess I'll be one of the "crazy old cat ladies" referred to so
negatively in this and many other shows and movies.  Oh, let's NOT
promote the idea that cats provide a valuable source of love for many
people... children... women and men of all ages... including little old
ladies.

I hope somebody else around here feels the same way I do about how cats
and attitudes about them are portrayed and promoted in the media...?

Indeed I do.  We have five very happy cats of varying ages in our
household.  They are a privileged and cherished lot, and our home would
feel empty without them.

I totally cannot understand people's negative attitude toward cats.  One
thing I do believe is that  many people resent their independence.

Since I didn't see the show i'm not going to comment on how it was
presented.

I haven't noticed other shows being anti-cat.

Well I have seen alot of shows always have the furballs in a bad situation
like getting run over or trapped somewhere quote un quote comical.  But have
seen the reverse where the show goes out of its way to use the furballs  in
tear jerker fashion.
We until recently had 6 cats now 5   if any one made a comment on us old
folks being senile  my response would be half a peace sign my 12 inch boot
up their a@@ as I picked them up and tossed them out the door

Maybe you're watching the wrong shows.   The ones i've seen haven't
abused casts.

I would point out on a recent episode of SVU they used cat hair to
put the perp at the scene of the crime.   Nothing disparaging about
cats.

Charmed had a cat in earlier seasons.   Nothing really bad.

Then there is Gilmore Girls.  Episode 5:
5. Cinnamon's Wake  (edit)
First aired: 11/2/2000
Writer: Daniel Palladino
Director: Michael Katleman
Guest star: Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Sally Struthers (Babette Dell),
Ted Rooney (Morey Dell), Scott Cohen (Max Medina), Jared Padalecki
(Dean Forester) , Darlene Kardon (Cashier), Jean-Paul Vignon (Andre),
Floyd Van Buskirk (Jed), DeLauné Michel (Dr. Jeannie)

During their weekly dinner at Emily's, Lorelai learns of her cousin
Claudia's funeral, but as she didn't know the woman, she doesn't want
to go. The next day Rory reminds Lorelai of the Chilton bake sale, and
on their way out they meet their neighbors Babette and Morey out
walking their cat Cinnamon. At the Chilton bake sale, Lorelai sees Max
Medina and is cold to him, but after he tells her that he wants to
help Rory and be friends, she agrees to meet him for coffee. Lorelai
meets with Max, who says that they should date. Lorelai thinks it's a
bad idea. Max proceeds to tell her that they are attracted to each
other, and after a sad story about seizing the day, Lorelai agrees to
dinner. At Luke's Lorelai gets a call from Rory, who tells Lorelai
that Cinnamon, the cat, has died. While at Cinnamon's wake, Rory goes
outside only to see Max. She demands an explanation from Lorelai. She
tells Rory that she really likes Max, and Rory says that's OK, she was
just upset that Lorelai didn't talk to her about it. Emily calls when
they get home and is upset that Lorelai went to a cat's funeral rather
than her cousin Claudia's. Rory tells Lorelai that it is OK that
Lorelai likes and dates Max.

Gilmore Girls is the best show on the planet right now.

Oh and speaking of cats, there is the show Early Edition where this
guy tomorrows paper today.....delivered by a cat.

I would point out dogs are probably easier to train for a TV show.
The cat would just say "You think you're the show runner?"

Other than The History Channel, The Learning Channel,
A&E, The Discovery Channel, and The Weather Channel,
there is not a thing  on TV worth anybody's time.  The
Socialist liberal leftist Democreeps in Hollywood have not
produced a thing for decades which is worth anybody's time,
unless you consider Brokeback Mountain & Desperate
Housewives worth *your* time.

Have to disagree.  There is Gilmore Girls, Everwood,
Medium, Lost, Charmed, Everybody Hates Chris,
L&O.

Let me put it this way: I was happily married to my wife
of 19 years prior to gay marriage.  Today a year and a half
after gay marriage here i'm still happily married to my wife.

Some of us are not homophobic.

As for DH, I tried a couple of episodes, never got into
the show.

I assume you never actually saw BM?

You don't have to be homophobic to not to want to waste your time.  I am not
to each his own but what man wants to go to a movie about 2 alternative
cowboys

Nope would not spend the money not my style or taste in movies!  I haven't
seen it but know plenty of people who have and it was not worth their time.
2 buddies are mine that are married male couple are insulted about the movie
and many of their crowd of friends fell the same way.

Nope.  Not this guy.

But then I go for Jordan Cavanaugh one hour later on another network.

There is also KE on CI opposite DH.

And then there are the hot women of Charmed  (HMC).

I can count on zero fingers the number of women on DH who do it for
me.

Hi everyone... Yes of course I realize there are tons of shows that
don't depict kitties in this light, and tons of shows that are great
for PR for them... I'm not upset about those, I am happy about those.
But here, in this thread, I was just whining about this particular
episode of CSI, which is an example of so many like that.

There's lots of scenes in movies and tv shows that show everything from
blase' insensitivity to outright glee at cats being hurt or killed.
This is what bothers me.  And you don't see it coming when you watch
something for the first time.  I try to find where to write to voice my
sadness at the apparent necessity to showcase cruelty and the tolerance
or acceptance of cruelty... and the fact that I won't be watching
again, and neither will the folks I know help pay for their posh
lifestyles if this is what they are about ... But we need **many**
people to do this to have an effect, don't you think?  If they think it
will hit them in the pocketbook, maybe they'll back off of this
approach to delighting the public.

Its everywhere.  Just the other night, one of the "hippest" comedies to
hit the airwaves (supposedly) advertised themselves... and they chose
to showcase a scene where this guy, one of the stars of this new Gift
to the Viewers of America, runs over his love interest's cat... and it
was supposed to be funny... oh, ha.  Yeah.  Give us more of THAT and
we'll be sure to tune in and support your sponsors, too.

Thanks for letting me rant.  Hoping some of you will join me in
expressing to the creators of these kinds of shows described above, and
to other people too, that this kind of absolute cold, ugly side of
humanity towards innocent, satient beings is totally unacceptable.  It
just scares me that if we don't do something, this kind of mentality
will gradually just overtake the majority of us.  What kind of world
would that be. (shudder)

Reminds me of the old Roman days or something.  The distress, pain, and
death of innocent beings at our mercy... oh what fun.  Happy happy, joy
joy, *clap clap clap*.  And referring back to the thread in here that
discusses where the human hurts and kills the little kitten.  Same
thing.  And for entertainment (not that ANY reason would be valid).
Geez.  God.

And i don't watch CSI (any flavor) so I can't comment on it now.
Since I missed the first season(s) I won't watch them now.

I have no idea what show it was.....the only comedy I watch is Gilmore
Girls.

BTW, I have no clue what show you're referring to.

Also around here many shows have a disclaimer ("no animals were
harmed in the making of this film."

As far as complaints: send them to the sponsors/the network/the
studio/and the FCC for consideration at license renewal time.

I must disagree. I have not owned a television in over a decade and
wouldn't want one. Not only is the programming lame, then you get
stuck with those mindless commercials.

Be TV-free!

I didn't see it but it doesn't sound good!  I've seen movies where it's
supposed to be funny when the family cat gets killed (National Lampoon's
Christmas Vacation and War of the Roses to  name a couple).  On the plus side,
the weekly show Cold Case portrays cats well.  The lead (the blond cop) has
two cats; I think one of them has only one eye and the other has three legs.
Thought it was great that they were not "perfect" looking cats.   One of the
other cops came there and said "what's wrong with these cats!?".  She looked
disgusted with him and said "Nothing!!"  Now if only more shows would follow
their example.

I've noticed this a lot in the entertainment industry also.  Cats are picked
on more than dogs.  It's always been that way, maybe because they're less
respected than dogs by so many people.  They're more likely to show dogs as
heros (Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Benji, etc.).  Maybe because they can learn
tricks, help the blind, etc. and thus are deemed more useful by some people.
But no one talks about how cats saved people from bubonic plague by killing
the rats - they did a great job but it's not a "trick", or how they've helped
sick or lonely people just by being comforting.  There are even cats who've
alerted their owners to the baby not breathing and others who have woken
their owners up in a fire.  People seem to have a "love em or hate em"
attitude about cats and some think of them as "pests" rather than pets.  I
just know that when someone says they hate cats, I ask them if they've ever
had one and 99.9% of the time they say no.  All they know about cats is that
the neighbour's is pooping in their garden or howling at night; they don't
know any of the good stuff.  I've also heard people say they didn't like them
until they're wife, husband, etc. got one and then they ended up loving the
cat.  They usually say "I didn't know cats were so affectionate".   Anyways,
yes, I think cats get a bum rap the most in entertainment; I guess it's
supposed to be "funny" when they get killed; don' t get it myself.
