As I have posted before I bought a Calico cat last Monday. I have to force
her to drink. I've tried everything. Prescription diet dry food, wiskas in a
can no can do. I went to the pet shop this morning and told the lady that
the cat just won't eat or drink. She was very nice to me telling me she
would do something she never does which is give out her cell phone number,
and I am to call her tomorrow to see if there is improvement. If not they
will have her seen by their vet.Tomorrow morning I will try a can of
tuna. The lady also GAVE me a tube of vitamines worth $8.99 that I am to put
in her mouth a certain amount every hour which is supposed to give her
thirst and appetieit. Today I am not working and if you re-call I had
mentionded that she hides under the bed all the time so I closed all the
doors and figured I'll do it my way. She is so loveable, sits on my lap and
purrs . I really don't want to loose her.She is 1 yr old.

If she has lived this far, she has been getting water somehow. Maybe
she doesn't like to drink when told to do so. If you can find some
canned food she will eat, that would solve most of the problem. What
was she eating where you got he rfrom? Also just leave some water
around, for those times when she feels like a sip. Or try one of those
fountain types, I am told running water is attractive to cats. However,
the core of your solution is canned food.

It is only Friday. It is all new to her. You seem very anxious, she could
be picking up on that, maybe. My cat likes to lick water off the shower
floor, off the patio pavement, the bowl is the water of last resort. =) If
you can weigh her it would be useful. Step on the scale, get your weight,
then weigh yourself with the cat, subtract. That should give you an idea if
she is loosing weight. 1 lb is significant in a cat. Does she look like
she is becoming thinner?
A trip to the vet might make you feel more at ease. Good luck, be observant,
relax and let her
do her thing at her own pace.

What is the vet saying? A cat who is not eating or drinking will get
dehydrated - this will only worsen its general condition.

I would also be very concerned. A cat can quickly become dehydrated, and I
believe yours should be seen by a vet immediately. Your vet may want to
give her fluids and something to stimulate the appetite. In the meantime,
have you tried baby food or tuna? Those are often appealing to a cat. If
you use baby food, buy *only* meat (such as Gerber's turkey or chicken). Be
very careful not to get anything with onion because onion can be toxic to a
cat. Try putting out plates of soft food with a "pungent" odor, and place
the food in a room where your cat will easily find it but where she can eat
in complete privacy.

How long has the cat gone without eating? It is very dangerous for her not
to eat all. She can develop hepatic lipidosis (liver disease) within days.
I would not bring her back to the pet store, just call your vet immediately
and explain that she is not eating. The vitamins she gave you are useless -
vitamins do *not* give a cat thirst and appetite as she stated. Remember,
she is not a vet, she is a pet store employee. This can become very serious
without a vet's consultation.

Also, forcing the vitamins into her mouth is just going to stress her out
even more.

OK, if your cat isn't eating, try different foods. She will eventually
eat if she is hungry. However, the water is a major concern. More
cats die from dehydration than any other cause. Get her to the vet
first thing in the morning. They can put some fluid under the skin to
prevent the kidneys from shutting down. Talk about your concerns with
the foods.
It may be that your new cat is just adjusting to her new surroundings,
but please don't take a chance on losing her.

If she's eating just canned food, she is getting some water into her through
that as canned is 75% water. Hopefully that's what she's being served.

And can cause more harm than good You could damage the throat or push the
food down the airways
