My cat refuses to cover his mess in the litter box. He covers his pee most
of the time, but now never covers his poo. He does have diabetes and has
lost weight, but has gained it back since being given insulin. the no
covering thing started before he was diagnosed, so it could be a factor.
Is there anyway to retrain him to cover his mess again?

has he been checked for arthritis?  Maybe its just too much work.  Cats
don't cover when they are the alpha cat as well.  Maybe he has throught you
were the alpha till now, but figures he is old and doesn't care if he is
challenging you for it.

Since you mention your cat is diabetic, Im going to recommend a group on the
net.  They are very kind and helpful, and have been working on making
diabetes something that is a long term managable disease.  You can find them
at felinediabetes.com

That's interesting.  I never knew that cats who are the alpha cat don't
always cover their messes.  My female cat has a covered litter box and
covers usually unless it's been a day or so since I sifted it out with the
handy sifting liners I use.  Do you think that she sometimes doesn't cover
because the litter box is covered or because she thinks she is the alpha
cat?  Do females have the whole alpha cat thing?  She is quite and
independent little thing, though most cats are :)  She does come to snuggle
sometimes though :)  This is a little off topic, but I was intrigued by a
reply to the OP. Sorry :)

My oldest female quit covering when I got my third cat - a male (2 females,
one male).  Maybe she's sending a message to him.
