I would point out around here the laws are very slowly changing. Courts are slowly starting to add in stiffer sentences and pain/suffering with the recognition that these animals are part of the family. It will be a long drawn out process but the wheels of justice are turning very slowly BUT THEY ARE TURNING.
Around here (large East Coast state in the US where gay marriage is legal) they would have gotten jail time.

Here in Canada the animal cruelty laws are from 1892. If you abuse an animal here, you *may* get a fine and you're not allowed to own another animal for 2 years (wow! that'll show em). We've been trying to get Bill C-50, which will put new rules into effect for cruelty to animals, passed for so many years now. They have to make sure every group is happy it seems before they pass it - I've heard that the hunters are worried they won't be able to hunt (not true), the Natives are concerned about their rights (won't affect them) and the fishermen in Newfoundland are concerned it may affect seal bashing (I won't call it "hunting" as the seals can't even run away from the men (another term I use loosley here). It almost passed recently but lo and behold, a new election took place abruptly and it got lost in the shuffle yet again. One step forward, two steps back. Sigh.

I was just thinking about this case the other day; it pops into my head quite a bit even though it happened 9 years ago. I remember reading the story in People magazine and crying whenever I thought about it for days, so it really affected me. To this day, I wonder where those as*sholes are and what they're doing - are they still killing animals? Did either of them "straighten" out (doubt it), I wonder. As I recall from the article, the Lemansky dick was the instigater and Myers more the followerer. Lemansky shot his mother's cat earlier that day then hatched the plan to do what they did that evening. The guy's a psycho. I hate when it pops into my head, it's usually late at night when I'm petting one of my cats, then I try to shake it away. I cried a million tears for those animals and what they went through, and my heart broke for those shelter workers who came upon the carnage the next morning.

(PeteCresswell) - 09 Mar 2006 00:17 GMT Per NanCe via CatKB.com:
>To this day, I wonder where those as*sholes are and what >they're doing I keep reading mag articles that say when kids start doing stuff like that, it's indicative of similar-but-escalating behavior in the future - and that sometimes they wind up graduating to people.
OTOH, some cultural heritages seem to have thing about cats. A guy I used to water ski with lived up in Penna's "Coal Country" where it was a recognized form of entertainment to capture a bunch of cats, put them in bags, and then throw the bags like clay pigeons - shooting the cats as the bags hit the ground and the cats clawed their way out and ran.
Ugly to be sure.... but I got the feeling that these weren't psychos - more like normal people expressing the stupider side of humanity.
I'm not religious, but the old sage's concept of original sin seems to me like a pretty good working hypothesis.

Matthew AKA NMR ( NO MORE RETAIL ) - 09 Mar 2006 00:39 GMT I believe that all recorded serial killers have been traced back to hurting small animals and working their way up to say

I don't know anyone who would ever do something like that. Non- : feeling sociopaths sounds more like it. Hi Nance, it doesn't seem normal to us, especially if cats are involved. But just think of all those guys who "hunt" for pleasure. Including our VP who gets joy out of shooting small birds.
Frieda - 09 Mar 2006 15:14 GMT After spending a few weks on these google groups I have already gathered that the law in the US is very lapsed when it comes to the treatment of animals compaired to the UK.
At the end of last year, the law was changed so that the authorities can impose tougher penalties on those who abuse or neglect animals. The Act stated the following:
1/ Those who care for an animal are now legally responsible for its welfare 2/ Anyone who is found guilty of animal abuse or neglect will no longer be allowed to keep any pets 3/ The worst cases of abuse or neglect will be punishable of a 6 month jail sentence plus a fine.
These amendments were suggested as part of a campaign by the newspaper The Mirror (a tabloid actually doing something possitive for a change). I remember this one particular story it had about a female dog which was pregnant. Some psycho tied a large weight to her body and thrown her in a cannel for her to drown. I really can't understand the mentality of these heartless people. It's stories like this that make me prefer animals to humans.
I'm not suggesting that the way things are done in the UK regarding abuse of animals or children is always better than the way things are in the US. I know the legal system in the UK if f**ked up, especially concerning the welfare of children and adoption system. But from what has been said by people in this group who live in America, it seems to me the laws regarding animal welfare are very lase compaired to UK legislation.

Coincidently hunting in Texas while drunk is a feloney.
Ajanta - 09 Mar 2006 21:22 GMT I must say it concerned me that most questions about the Cheney incident were about cover-up etc, not why these guys were out shooting innocent birds in the first place.
What a gulf from the few people I met in India who won't eat or drink anything themselves until they have fed an animal, usually birds.

A number of quail hunting experts have come forward to say the injury pattern the victim sustained is consistent with a victim being five feet away from the VP, not 30.
This was on some of the news outlets other than FAUX NEWS. (MSNBC, CNN).
It should also be noted that when Faux news aired the interview with the VP, he admitted having a beer at lunch. Guess what was excised from future airings of that interview.
You did note that some of the pellets entered the heart of the guy Channey shot? That doesn't happen at 30 feet.
Don't swallow everything this white house tells you, hook, line and sinker.
Matthew AKA NMR ( NO MORE RETAIL ) - 13 Mar 2006 21:59 GMT A PELLET not some and yes it could happen with any gunshot wound. Last I looked even thou I hunt but not for small birds it was legal to do so and it is not for pleasure when you go out and retrieve the birds and eat them. That is called hunting and lunch. Or would you prefer to take the sledge hammer to the cow before you eat that hamburger you had for lunch
>>> And our VP who can't tell the difference between a 6'+ tall human >>and a quail even though the human was FIVE FEET IN FRONT OF HIM. Don't know a thing about hunting do you. > A number of quail hunting experts have come forward to say the injury > pattern the victim sustained is consistent with a victim being five > feet away from the VP, not 30. 5 feet away with quail shot or fowl shot would have killed him or done a heck of a lot more damage than it did. Look up ammunition there were using was pellet not a slug at 5 feet you would have a very small blast radius. Think about that One statement said he had a bloody face at five feet there wuld have been no face at all usde common sense and stop spreading conspiracy therioes; which I love a good one but this is gone to far.

Anybody who thinks a government can run up huge deficits without them coming back as inflation is, IMHO, just plain gullible.
I *could* get all indignant and rant about the morality of spending now and letting our children/grandchildren worry about how to pay for it... but I'm really just concerned about not dying in inflation-induced poverty.

It's me that's too sensitive. I'm going to have to learn to deal with these stories because it doesn't look like people are going to stop abusing animals for good any time soon. Maybe we can't prevent them from doing it but at least we can try and change the laws so that they're punished more severely.

Catgirl - 09 Mar 2006 04:05 GMT Echoing everyone else's feelings here... I too still cry when I think about this, and the countless other incidents we don't even hear about. I cry when I think of the absolute coldness in countries like China (incuding our own) where cats and other animals in their meat or other "animal products" industries receive ZERO mercy or compassion, in fact are the recipients of needless additional acts of obviously gleeful cruelty. My hats off to the brave people who go undercover to expose this to the masses. I will *never* be able comprehend how humans can do these things. And why is it almost always males (mostly young) who get off on hurting animals, and why is it almost always kitties? I'll just never understand. We gotta just keep on doing good in the world, and speaking up for those who cannot... we have to be the ones to help them all we can. Teaching empathy to children is one way we can fight this battle of horrors against our fellow beings who can't fight for themselves. I despise it when I see people allowing their babies or children to yank away on cats and puppies and other assorted "cute" (peuke) actions that clearly show no empathy, because they aren't being taught. Oh, and in movies... where they insist on depicting the harming of an animal by humans in a supposedly humorous situation, thus minimizing the empathy effect even more and making it appear acceptable... why is it always cats? Not that it should be ANY of our little fellow beings, but it seems to be always cats. Makes me sick. Off my soapbox now... but this is an important topic, for sure.

I remember years ago parents of this 13 year old girl locked her up for the duration of her 13 years. Locked up in a cage and treated like an animal i don't even know if she had basic language skills. The parents got probation. I hope the girl turned out ok.
Same thing some of the laws just really suck cause someone that would do something that cruel to animals has a sociopathic personality and it's too bad they aren't taught any lessons in the present where down the road they'll end up raping or robbing or killing and doing there stint in prison.
This makes me real sick to my stomach.
And i'm sure they live with what they did cause someone who would do that is a pure sociopath in the first place. Only thing these kids care about is they don't go to jail, and they probably won't.

The foster parents in florida that kept developmentally disabled children in cages for the night. They are the ones that suffered no legal problems.
