Why is my neutered 10 month old male comestic shorthair chewing EVERYTHING
in sight?  He used to be an outdoor cat until I moved a cuople of months
ago to a "city" environment and don't want to let him go out.  He has sat
at the door many times, but has never made the move to run outside.  He
LIKES being an indoor cat.  He will find whatever paper he can (ie:
newspaper, paper towels, kleenex box, bills, mail, etc.) and shred it into
small pieces. His name is Spike but I often call him "Shredder".  Any
ideas on what's wrong?  How can I stop this behavior and rest in piece
knowing he won't chew something important?  Thanks to all! Cathy

I can't answer your question, only share your experience.  We have five cats,
and two of them absolutely love to chew corrugated cardboard.  Occasionally
they will chew other paper products as well.

Mine eats scotch tape just to barf it up.  The kids try to put posters
up in their room and they get woken up by her standing next to the
poster chewing the tape off.

Eating abnormal things is not unusual for cats - a lot of cats eat
rubber for instance - My own Katie is never happier than when she has
a length of black rubber elastic to chompdown on. The stronger the
rubber smell, the better.
This behaviour is known as 'Pika' - why they do it is anyones
guess, I think I used to know, but have forgotten.
