Hello all,
I've got a big male black short hair about 3 years old. One younger
and one older cat also. The big male is literally afraid of his own
shadow. He will walk into a room he's been in a 100 times, but act like
he's never been there before. He's not exactly afraid, but will enter
the room slowly, inspecting each and every single thing for about 10
minutes. He will even freak when he sees us walking down the hall
sometimes. (He'll stop, get big-eyed and scared until we say something
so he knows it's ok). He HAS very good eyesite (he follows and catches
toys we throw at him).
An important note: He is not afraid to check everything out. He's
super suspicious, but will slink over to each thing to investigate. He
just seems a nervous wreck. A contributing factor is the younger cat
will jump him around every corner.
One time some ants got into his food and he dang near hit the ceiling he
jumped back so fast.
We feel so sorry for him, but don't know what the real problem is. He
seems a bit mental.
Any ideas?
TIA

Dear Bradley
There are a number of issues a-foot here.
Aside from the possibility that he may be in need of medication to help him
cope, I would consider having a vet checking him out, including x-rays for
signs of injuries he may have received before he came to you. Black cats,
from what I have read from time to time, often receive mistreatment at the
hands of superstitious if not evil people.
A guess is that some one or some thing scared the living daylights out of
your good buddy before you got him. Cats I have known are pretty good at
looking after number one. They seem to recognize a large opponent and leave
the scene ASAP. I have even seen cats back off a much larger advisory
including a pit bull puppy half grown. If my suspicions are correct, he may
have previously been subject to some major danger that even as a large cat
he couldn't control.
Above all be sure to make it clear to you good buddy that you love him and
will protect him.
Cheers
Albert

Its normal for cats to take a lot of notice of their sense of smell. If you
have a home where there are frequent visitors (school kids for example) the
cat's senses can be stimulated by odors from leather articles or footwear
for example or any new smell which they relate to danger from past
experiences.
Out adopted street stray Tom, does a little of what your fella is
doing,..but I put it down to his heightened awareness from outside.
